IELTS Writing Task 1 question
A large company in your area has decided to spend a certain amount of money, either to sponsor a local children's sports team for two years, or to pay for two open-air concerts. It has asked for feedback from the general public.
Write a letter to the company. In your letter
- describe the benefits of sponsoring the sports team
- summarise the benefits of paying for the concerts
- say how you think the company should spend the money
You do NOT need to write any addresses.
Begin your letter as follows:
Dear Sir or Madam,
Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Sir or Madam,
I am writing to give feedback on funding provided to children's sports team and open-air concerts.
The sports team needed financial support for a long time due to the poor economic background of some players and deteriorating conditions of playgrounds. Sponsoring youth's sports team can help each player to develop as a national champion and benefit a society as a whole. The talented and capable students whose parents cannot afford expensive sports tuition fees, can get a chance to evolve and grow further as a professional through a team.
Although providing funding to open-air concerts can also be advantageous, as many youngsters do not have enough sources to enjoy themselves. Native and international students can also get an opportunity to interact with each other and learn cultural differences.
The company may have their own opinions of spending money but according to my perspective, the money should be given to someone who really need it and can bring changes and success to themselves and society.
Thank you for considering my views and I hope the decision will be taken in favour of a group who requires the funding desperately. I look forward to your decision.
Yours faithfully,
Ashu Berwal

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
You have addressed all three bullet points of the prompt. You clearly described the benefits of the sports team and the concerts, and you provided a clear recommendation. The ideas are relevant and logically developed. However, the response could be improved by providing more specific details or examples to support your arguments, such as mentioning the specific type of sports equipment needed or the nature of the concerts. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter, and the purpose of the communication is clear throughout the text.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The letter is well-organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the prompt, which helps the reader follow your argument easily. You use some cohesive devices, such as 'Although' and 'However,' to link ideas. To reach a higher band, try to vary your linking words more and ensure that the transition between the second and third paragraphs is smoother. The overall progression of ideas is logical and easy to follow.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You have a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your meaning clearly. Phrases like 'deteriorating conditions' and 'financial support' are used correctly. There are some minor issues with word choice, such as 'sources' instead of 'resources' and 'evolve' in the context of a student's growth, which is slightly unnatural. You attempt to use some less common vocabulary, but there is room for more precise and sophisticated collocations to demonstrate a wider range. Overall, your vocabulary is adequate for the task.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While your meaning is always clear, there are some grammatical slips, such as 'funding provided to children's sports team' (should be 'a children's sports team') and 'someone who really need it' (should be 'needs'). Additionally, 'youth's sports team' is slightly awkward; 'youth sports team' would be more natural. Despite these errors, they do not impede communication. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of articles.
