Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Sir or Madam,

My name is Max Thakkar and I am a resident of the modal town, Ahmedabad. I read an advertisement in esteem daily where you have mentioned that you are seeking for a feedback from local public whether you should sponsor a local children's sports team for two years or to pay for two open-air concerts.

Firstly, there are many benefits of sponsoring sports team for children for two years. Life of most of the children nowadays is isolated and they spend most of their time playing video games or watching television as a result of which obesity is becoming very common among young children. However, if you sponsor for a sports team more children will get inspired to start playing outside. It will also be a big relief for parents.

Secondly, organizing two open-air concerts is also an amazing idea because music is an imperative part of our lives. It helps reduce stress and brings happiness. Moreover, it can change the mood of any person immediately. It will also bring people of all ages together and also adds a sense of belonging in people's lives.

I would suggest you to sponsor two open-air concerts because music will be enjoyed by people of all ages and concert is a place where people not only spend time together listening to music but also dance together which is again an exercise for people to stay active and healthy. I hope you would like my feedback and decide to spend money accordingly.

Yours faithfully,

Max Thakkar

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly outlined the benefits of the sports team sponsorship, summarized the advantages of the concerts, and provided a clear recommendation. Your ideas are relevant and well-developed, particularly the discussion on childhood obesity and the social benefits of music. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a company. To reach a higher band, ensure that your introduction does not contain minor inaccuracies, such as 'seeking for a feedback', which is grammatically incorrect. Overall, the response is well-focused and fulfills the requirements of the task effectively.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs for each point, and a concluding recommendation. You have used transition words such as 'Firstly', 'Secondly', and 'Moreover' to guide the reader through your arguments. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct ideas. However, the cohesion is sometimes a bit mechanical. To improve, try to vary your linking phrases and ensure that referencing is always precise. For example, the transition between the benefits of music and the final recommendation could be smoother to create a more cohesive flow throughout the text.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using words like 'imperative', 'isolated', and 'obesity' correctly. There are some minor errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'seeking for a feedback' (should be 'seeking feedback') and 'modal town' (likely meant 'modern' or 'local'). While these errors do not impede communication, they indicate a need for more precise control over common collocations. To achieve a higher band, focus on using more sophisticated vocabulary and ensuring that your word choices are natural and contextually accurate.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is appropriate for this task. There are some grammatical slips, such as 'if you sponsor for a sports team' (the verb 'sponsor' does not take 'for') and 'concert is a place' (should be 'a concert is a place'). Despite these errors, your meaning is always clear, and the punctuation is generally accurate. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement and the correct usage of prepositions. Increasing the frequency of error-free complex sentences will help you move toward a higher band score.
