IELTS Writing Task 1 question

A large company in your area has decided to spend a certain amount of money, either to sponsor a local children's sports team for two years, or to pay for two open-air concerts. It has asked for feedback from the general public.

Write a letter to the company. In your letter

You do NOT need to write any addresses.

Begin your letter as follows:

Dear Sir or Madam,

Student answer (Band 5.0)

You recently attended a party, where you saw one of the guests being rude to a neighbour in the next house. Write a letter to the guest,

Complaining about their behaviour

Suggesting that the guest apologies to the neighbour

Asking them not to behave like this again

Dear Mr Smith,

I am writing this because of your rude behaviour at the party last night.

This party was meant to be peaceful, but the way you spoke to Mrs Smith was really disrespectful. She politely asked you to turned off the loud speaker. She is an old lady, and really deserves respect from all of us.

I want you to make an apology to her. If you're ashamed to do so, then you can write a letter to show that you're feeling sorry about your behaviour with her, which was not intentional.

I do hope that you should control your temper and not to behave like this in future. There is another party coming next week in our neighbour and I hope you should behave well to show up.

I hope to see you at the next party.

Yours sincerely,

Parwinder Kaur

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 1.0

The response is completely off-topic. The task instructions required a letter to a company regarding the sponsorship of a sports team or concerts. Instead, the student wrote a letter to an individual regarding a social incident at a party. Because the response fails to address the prompt entirely, it cannot be assessed against the specific requirements of the task. In an actual IELTS examination, this would result in a very low score for Task Achievement as the candidate has not fulfilled the requirements of the prompt provided.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The letter is logically organized into clear paragraphs, and the progression of ideas within the letter is easy to follow. The student uses basic cohesive devices such as 'If you're ashamed to do so' and 'I do hope that', which help connect the sentences. However, the overall structure is undermined by the fact that the content does not match the task prompt. While the paragraphing is appropriate for a letter format, the lack of relevance to the actual task makes the coherence less effective in a test context.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary used is adequate for the purpose of writing a complaint letter. The student uses phrases like 'disrespectful', 'intentional', and 'control your temper', which are appropriate for the tone of the letter. There is some repetition, and the range of vocabulary is somewhat limited, but it is sufficient to convey the intended meaning clearly. There are no significant spelling errors, and the word choices are generally accurate for the context of a personal complaint.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The student uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are some grammatical errors, such as 'asked you to turned off' (should be 'turn off') and 'not to behave like this' (should be 'not to behave like this in the future'). Additionally, 'I hope you should behave well' is slightly unnatural. Despite these errors, the meaning remains clear throughout the text. The punctuation is generally correct, and the letter follows a standard formal structure.
