IELTS Writing Task 1 question
A large company in your area has decided to spend a certain amount of money, either to sponsor a local children's sports team for two years, or to pay for two open-air concerts. It has asked for feedback from the general public.
Write a letter to the company. In your letter
- describe the benefits of sponsoring the sports team
- summarise the benefits of paying for the concerts
- say how you think the company should spend the money
You do NOT need to write any addresses.
Begin your letter as follows:
Dear Sir or Madam,
Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Sir or Madam,
I am writing to give my feedback about where you can spend your money. I received an email from your company asking for my viewpoint about your recent prospect .
Firstly, if you will sponsor children's sports team then it would be beneficial for those children. They get a chance to practice in sports with all safety gears and might reach their full potential. As a result many of them may be selected in national teams which will be advantageous for our country as our national team will get talented players.
Secondly, there are some benefits of devoting money to two open-air concerts. It will increase tourism in our country which is helpful for economic growth. Moreover, many people do not have enough money to buy a concert ticket, but if you organize concerts people can enjoy with their friends and family and make lifetime memories.
Lastly, in my opinion, you should spend your money equally on both the things. For example, you can support a local sport's team for a year and organize only one concert. By doing this you do not have to spend extra money and both the purposes will be full-filled.
I hope this suggestion will help you to take a decision.
Yours faithfully,

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The response addresses all three bullet points of the prompt effectively. You clearly describe the benefits of the sports sponsorship, such as safety and potential for national selection, and the benefits of the concerts, such as economic growth and community enjoyment. Your position on how to spend the money is clear and well-supported by a logical compromise. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter. To reach a higher band, ensure that your ideas are slightly more developed; for instance, you could elaborate on how the company's brand image might improve through these initiatives to add more depth to your argument.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs for each point, and a conclusion. You use transition signals such as 'Firstly', 'Secondly', 'Moreover', and 'Lastly' to guide the reader through your argument. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct ideas. While the flow is generally smooth, some of the cohesive devices are a bit mechanical. To improve, try to vary your linking phrases and ensure that the connection between sentences is more fluid, rather than relying on standard list-like transitions.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your ideas clearly. Phrases like 'reach their full potential', 'economic growth', and 'lifetime memories' are used effectively. There are some minor issues with word choice, such as 'devoting money' (allocating/investing would be more precise) and 'full-filled' (which should be 'fulfilled'). You have a good grasp of general vocabulary, but incorporating more topic-specific collocations related to corporate social responsibility or community development would help elevate your score to a higher band.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are some grammatical slips, such as 'if you will sponsor' (should be 'if you sponsor') and 'sport's team' (should be 'sports team'). The use of articles is occasionally inconsistent, such as 'in sports' or 'in national teams'. Despite these errors, your meaning is always clear, and the errors do not impede communication. To improve, focus on conditional sentence accuracy and consistent article usage. Your control of punctuation is generally good, supporting the overall readability of the letter.
