IELTS Writing Task 1 question
A large company in your area has decided to spend a certain amount of money, either to sponsor a local children's sports team for two years, or to pay for two open-air concerts. It has asked for feedback from the general public.
Write a letter to the company. In your letter
- describe the benefits of sponsoring the sports team
- summarise the benefits of paying for the concerts
- say how you think the company should spend the money
You do NOT need to write any addresses.
Begin your letter as follows:
Dear Sir or Madam,
Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Sir or Madam,
I am writing to provide feedback yor company has asked regarding whether to sponsor local children's sports team or to fund open-air concerts.
On the one hand, sponsoring sports team would encourage the young sports aspirants to perform with excellence, which would not only enhance their sport but also raise awareness among the local residents.
On the other hand, funding music concerts would bring residents together which will foster social cohesion, along with providing them with a cathartic outlet to destress. It provides residents an opportunity to make stronger social connections while enjoying music
In my view, although recreational activities are crucial in life, motivating children's sport is equally important. Therefore, your company could do one initiative each year, for instance, pay for music concert in the first year and sponsor sports team in the second year, which would satisfy both entertainment and motivational needs of our community.
Thankyou for your genorous support, and I hope you would find my feedback valuable.
Kind regards,
Rashpal Kaur

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You described the benefits of the sports team, summarized the benefits of the concerts, and provided a clear recommendation. Your ideas are relevant and well-developed, particularly the suggestion to split the funding between the two initiatives, which shows a thoughtful approach to the task. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a company. To reach a higher band, ensure that you fully expand on the 'why' behind your suggestions, perhaps by mentioning specific impacts on the community, such as health benefits or local economic growth.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs for each option, and a concluding recommendation. You use transition signals like 'On the one hand' and 'On the other hand' effectively to guide the reader through your arguments. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct ideas. To improve, ensure that your referencing is always precise; for example, in the second paragraph, 'it' is used, but it is slightly ambiguous whether it refers to the concerts or the funding. Strengthening these small cohesive links would enhance the flow of your writing.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary, using terms like 'aspirants', 'social cohesion', 'cathartic', and 'initiative'. These choices are appropriate for the context and show an attempt to use more sophisticated language. There are a few minor errors, such as 'yor' (typo for 'your') and 'genorous' (typo for 'generous'). Additionally, 'motivating children's sport' is slightly unnatural; 'supporting youth sports' would be more idiomatic. Overall, your vocabulary is sufficient to convey your message clearly and with some precision, though a few more collocations would elevate the quality of your expression.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as the conditional-like structure in your recommendation: 'if... then' logic is implied well. There are some grammatical slips, such as missing articles ('sponsor local children's sports team' should be 'sponsor a local children's sports team') and minor punctuation issues. However, these errors do not impede communication. To improve, focus on article usage and subject-verb agreement. For instance, 'your company could do one initiative' is clear, but 'the company' or 'you' would be more consistent. Your control of grammar is generally good and supports your ideas effectively.
