Dear Sir or Madam,

Student answer (Band 7.5)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing to provide feedback your company has asked regarding whether to sponsor a local children's sports team or to fund open-air concerts.

On the one hand, benefits of sponsoring a sports team are significant. It will encourage young sports aspirants, as it will not only provide necessary sports supplies to the team but also financially assist in upgrading old facilities in the local sportsclub .

On the other hand, funding music concerts would benefit residents by providing them with a cathartic outlet to destress. It will also help residents to make stronger social connections while enjoying pleasant music in an oudoor environment.

In my view, although recreational activities are crucial in life, motivating children's sports is equally important. Therefore, your company could do one initiative each year, for instance, pay for a music concert in the first year and sponsor a sports team in the second year, which would satisfy both entertainment and fundamental needs of our community.

Thank you for your generous support, and I hope you would find my feedback valuable.

Kind regards,

Rashpal Kaur

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

You have addressed all three bullet points of the task effectively. You described the benefits of the sports team, summarized the benefits of the concerts, and provided a clear recommendation. Your suggestion to split the funding over two years is a creative and well-developed solution that demonstrates a clear position. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter, and the purpose of the communication is clear from the outset. To reach a higher band, you could expand slightly more on the specific impact of the sports sponsorship, perhaps mentioning the long-term health benefits for the children, to further develop your ideas.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.0

The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs for each option, and a concluding recommendation. You use transition signals such as 'On the one hand', 'On the other hand', and 'In my view' to guide the reader through your argument. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct ideas. The flow of information is smooth, and the relationship between sentences is clear. To improve, ensure that referencing is always precise; for example, 'one initiative each year' is clear, but ensure that all pronouns consistently refer back to their intended antecedents throughout the text.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.0

You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary, including terms like 'aspirants', 'cathartic', 'destress', and 'fundamental needs'. These choices are generally accurate and appropriate for the context. There are a few minor spelling errors, such as 'oudoor' instead of 'outdoor' and 'sportsclub' which should be two words. While your vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning with precision, incorporating a few more sophisticated collocations or idiomatic expressions related to community development would help elevate your score further towards the higher bands.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures effectively. For example, the sentence 'your company could do one initiative each year... which would satisfy both...' demonstrates good control over complex sentence construction. There are occasional minor errors, such as the missing preposition in 'feedback your company has asked' (should be 'feedback that your company has asked for'). However, these errors are infrequent and do not impede communication. The majority of your sentences are error-free, showing a good level of grammatical control.
