Student answer (Band 7.5)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing to provide feedback that your company has asked for regarding whether to sponsor a local children's sports team for two years or to fund two open-air concerts.

On the one hand, benefits of sponsoring a sports team are significant. It will encourage young sports aspirants to paticipate which will improve their physical health. Moreover, it will provide necessary sports supplies or equipment to the team and also assist in improving training and upgrading old facilities in the local sports club .

On the other hand, funding two music concerts would benefit residents by providing them with a cathartic outlet to destress. It will also help residents to make stronger social connections by spending quality time together while enjoying pleasant music in an oudoor environment.

In my view, although recreational activities are crucial in life, motivating children's sports is equally important. Therefore, your company could do one initiative each year, for instance, sponsor a local sports team in the first year and pay for a music concert in the second year.

Thank you for your generous support, and I hope you would find my feedback valuable.

Kind regards,

Rashpal Kaur

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0

The response successfully addresses all three bullet points of the prompt. You have clearly described the benefits of the sports team sponsorship and the music concerts, and you have provided a clear, well-reasoned recommendation for how the company should allocate its funds. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter, and the purpose is clear from the outset. The ideas are relevant and sufficiently developed to meet the requirements of the task. To reach a higher band, you could provide slightly more specific examples of how the sports equipment or the concert environment would benefit the community, but overall, the task is fully addressed.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.0

The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs for each option, and a concluding recommendation. The use of cohesive devices such as 'On the one hand', 'Moreover', and 'In my view' helps to guide the reader through your argument effectively. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct ideas. The flow of information is smooth, and the relationship between sentences is clear. The letter maintains a professional structure throughout, making it easy to follow your reasoning from the initial feedback to the final suggestion.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.0

You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary appropriate for a formal letter, such as 'cathartic outlet', 'recreational activities', and 'generous support'. There are a few minor spelling errors, such as 'paticipate' (participate) and 'oudoor' (outdoor), which are minor slips rather than systematic issues. The word choice is generally precise and fits the context well. To improve further, you could incorporate more sophisticated collocations or less common lexical items to demonstrate a wider range, but your current vocabulary is sufficient to convey your ideas clearly and effectively.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.5

The response shows a good command of grammatical structures. You use a mix of simple and complex sentences effectively, such as 'Although recreational activities are crucial in life, motivating children's sports is equally important.' Most sentences are error-free, and the punctuation is generally accurate. There are very few grammatical slips, and those that exist do not impede communication. The control over verb tenses and sentence construction is consistent, which allows for a smooth reading experience. Continued focus on proofreading for minor slips will help you achieve a higher score.
