Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing to express my feedback as a local resident for a funding by a large sized company in our area for whether they spent the funds for our children's sports team for two years or to organize two open air concerts for public.

Firstly, I would like appreciate the fact that the company is interested in sponsoring the sports team for children in our area. It will be beneficial for the long run for our children future to proceed this sport as a career also It is a good use of funds for a healthy activity which will encourage our children to participate in a sport will boost there confidence and help them maintain it for two years, For example, this can be used in the construction of the playground sin our area which is highly needed.

Secondly, for open air concerts company can brand them through the advertisement around the event and organize an entertainment for the locals which help to to enjoy and spend some quality time with there loved ones in open area and get the experience of lifetime by listening to exceptional musicians as in the recent time we have not being through such entertainment based events or concerts in our area.

In my opinion the company should spend the funds to sponsor the areas children sport team which will give more benefit to the locals as children can have a physical activity and company can construct the ground for locals for long term benefits.

Kind regards,

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response addresses all three bullet points of the prompt. You clearly describe the benefits of the sports team and the concerts, and you provide a definite recommendation. However, the development of ideas is somewhat uneven. For instance, the suggestion to use the sports funding for the 'construction of the playground' is a bit disconnected from the primary task of sponsoring a team. While the position is clear, the explanation of the benefits could be more nuanced to fully meet the criteria for a higher band. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter, and the purpose of the communication is consistently maintained throughout.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The letter is logically organized into clear paragraphs, each focusing on a specific part of the prompt. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'Firstly', 'Secondly', and 'In my opinion' to guide the reader. However, the flow within paragraphs is sometimes hindered by awkward phrasing and run-on sentences, such as the long sentence in the second paragraph starting with 'It will be beneficial...'. Additionally, some referencing is slightly unclear, and the use of cohesive devices is somewhat mechanical. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring smoother transitions between sentences would enhance the overall coherence.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'sponsoring', 'exceptional', and 'long-term benefits'. However, there are several instances of word-choice errors and awkward collocations, such as 'funding by a large sized company' instead of 'funding from a large company' and 'proceed this sport' instead of 'pursue this sport'. There are also minor spelling or grammatical slips, such as 'there' instead of 'their'. While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning, it lacks the precision and flexibility required for a higher band score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

You attempt a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but the accuracy is inconsistent. There are frequent grammatical errors, particularly with prepositions, articles, and verb forms (e.g., 'I would like appreciate' instead of 'I would like to appreciate', and 'we have not being through' instead of 'we have not been through'). Punctuation is also problematic, with several comma splices and run-on sentences that make the text harder to follow. While the meaning is generally clear, the frequency of these errors prevents the writing from reaching a higher level of grammatical control.
