Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing to provide my feedback on proposed investment either to sponsor a local children’s sport team or pay for two open-air concerts.

Firstly, cricket has been the primary sport in our neighbourhood. Mumbai Indians, who is our local cricket sport team has been selected to participate in the national level cricket competition. But, the lack of finance is restricting the team to practice in better infrastructure. The team needs multiple cricket kits, hard tennis balls, professional costume and funds to stay overnight in hotels. I see tremendous potential in them to win the cup, if they could get the necessary support.

Secondly, if you could pay for two open-air concerts that would be very helpful. Retired people from our community could attend it. It gives people an extra leisure activity, they could listen to their favourite melodies and could enjoy in groups. We have an auditorium facility in our society with siting capacity for 200 people.

I personally believe that providing financial support to children’s sport team is more suitable decision. It’s for the future and in India, where cricket platform such as T20 and IPL is providing platform to juveniles. We schould mutually agree to sponsor local sport team. Should you require more details, I am happy to assist you.

I look forward to hearing back from you.

Kind regards,

Neel.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

You have addressed all three bullet points in the prompt effectively. You clearly described the benefits of sponsoring the sports team, summarized the benefits of the concerts, and provided a clear recommendation. Your position is consistent throughout the letter. The ideas are relevant and well-supported, particularly the specific needs of the cricket team. To reach a higher band, ensure that the tone remains consistently formal; for example, the transition to the recommendation could be slightly more professional. Overall, the task is fully addressed with well-developed ideas.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter is logically organized with clear paragraphing. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the task, which helps the reader follow your argument. You use cohesive devices such as 'Firstly', 'Secondly', and 'I personally believe' to guide the reader. However, some transitions could be more sophisticated, and the connection between sentences is occasionally slightly mechanical. The use of referencing is generally clear, though some minor improvements in linking ideas within paragraphs would enhance the flow further.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your ideas clearly. Phrases like 'tremendous potential', 'financial support', and 'leisure activity' are used appropriately. There are some minor inaccuracies, such as 'cricket sport team' (should be 'cricket team') and 'siting capacity' (should be 'seating capacity'). While you attempt to use some less common vocabulary, there is room for more precise collocations to reach a higher band. The errors present do not impede communication.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'investment either to sponsor' (missing 'in'), 'who is our local cricket sport team' (should be 'which is'), and 'schould' (spelling error). Additionally, there are some issues with article usage and subject-verb agreement. While these errors are noticeable, they do not prevent the reader from understanding your message. To improve, focus on proofreading for small slips and refining your use of relative clauses and articles.
