IELTS Writing Task 1 question
A large company in your area has decided to spend a certain amount of money, either to sponsor a local children's sports team for two years, or to pay for two open-air concerts. It has asked for feedback from the general public.
Write a letter to the company. In your letter
- describe the benefits of sponsoring the sports team
- summarise the benefits of paying for the concerts
- say how you think the company should spend the money
You do NOT need to write any addresses.
Begin your letter as follows:
Dear Sir or Madam,
Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Sir or Madam,
I am writing to provide my feedback on how to use the money by sponsoring the sports team or paying for the concerts.
Firstly, there is significant importance in sponsoring the local children's sports team because in this modern era, due to the excessive use of modern technology such as smartphones, laptops, and computers, the majority of children spend their leisure time watching movies and web series. As a result, they are not involved in any physical activity, which is not good for their health. Additionally, from my perspective, if somebody motivates them by giving rewards if they are involved in sports, then they definitely start playing games.
By contrast, paying for concerts is also a good approach because sometimes people have talent, but they do not have enough money to show their talent in front of the public. So paying for concerts provides an opportunity for these people to show their talent and build their career.
I personally believe that the company is supposed to pay half of the money for both activities so that they equally have an opportunity to show their talent.
Thank you for your time and consideration.
Yours sincerely,
Sargun

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The response addresses all three bullet points of the task. You clearly describe the benefits of the sports team, focusing on physical health and motivation, and outline the benefits of the concerts, focusing on talent development. Your position on how the money should be spent is clearly stated in the final paragraph. The ideas are relevant and sufficiently developed for a General Training Task 1. To reach a higher band, ensure that your tone is consistently formal; phrases like 'if somebody motivates them' are slightly informal for a letter to a company.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs for each option, and a concluding recommendation. You use transition signals such as 'Firstly', 'Additionally', 'By contrast', and 'So' to guide the reader. Paragraphing is used effectively to separate distinct ideas. The flow of information is smooth, and the relationship between ideas is easy to follow. To improve, try to vary your cohesive devices further, as some of the current transitions are quite standard.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task. You use appropriate terms like 'physical activity', 'leisure time', and 'consideration'. However, the vocabulary is somewhat repetitive, particularly the use of 'talent' three times in the final paragraph. To achieve a higher band, aim for more precise and varied word choices. For example, instead of 'not good for their health', you could use 'detrimental to their well-being'. The language is clear and communication is never impeded by your word choices.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are some minor grammatical slips, such as 'they definitely start playing games' (which would be more natural as 'they would definitely start playing games') and 'the company is supposed to pay' (which is slightly informal). However, these errors are infrequent and do not cause confusion. Your punctuation is generally accurate, and the sentence structure is clear. To improve, incorporate a wider variety of complex grammatical forms, such as conditional structures or passive voice, to demonstrate greater control.
