Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Manager,

I hope you are doing well. I am writing this letter regarding your interest to spend a certain amount of money, either to sponsor a local children's team for two years, or to pay for two open-air concerts. Since you have asked a feedback from the general public, I am of the view that this is a good initiative from your company which must be applauded and appreciated. This motive will inspire other stakeholders to come forward and work towards the betterment of our society.

First of all, I would like to say that many children's in our society cant afford to buy the mandatory equipment required to play cricket. By sponsoring them, we are giving them a platform to focus on the game rather then worrying about other things. This will boost their confidence and will help them polish their skills more effectively. They will be able to hire a professional coach which will work on their technique and footwork. In the long run, some of them will become a future stars for their country.

On the other hand, paying for two open-air concerts is a diverse idea. This will give the people who belongs to different fields of life an opportunity to relax and enjoy their time with families. Moreover, it will give an impression of unity and discipline among people.

I would argue that its better to pay for one open-air concert, and at the same time sponsoring the children's team for one year. This will benefit everyone.

Thank you for hearing me out.

Yours sincerely

Arslan Abbas

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly described the benefits of the sports team sponsorship, summarized the benefits of the concerts, and provided a clear, logical recommendation for how the company should spend the money. Your position is consistent throughout the letter. The ideas are relevant and well-developed, particularly the section on the sports team. To reach a higher band, ensure that the tone remains consistently formal; for instance, avoid phrases like 'hearing me out' which are slightly informal for a business letter.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs for each requirement, and a conclusion. You use cohesive devices such as 'First of all', 'On the other hand', and 'Moreover' to guide the reader through your arguments. Paragraphing is used effectively to separate distinct ideas. The progression of ideas is smooth and easy to follow. To improve, ensure that referencing is always precise; for example, 'this motive' in the introduction is slightly vague—'this initiative' would be more accurate.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'stakeholders', 'betterment', 'mandatory', and 'diverse'. However, there are some minor errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'children's' (plural of child is children, so 'children' is correct) and 'people who belongs' (should be 'belong'). Additionally, 'future stars' should be 'future stars' or 'a future star'. While these errors do not impede communication, they prevent the vocabulary from reaching a higher level of precision.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is appropriate for this task. There are several grammatical slips, such as 'many children's' (incorrect pluralization), 'cant' (missing apostrophe), 'rather then' (should be 'rather than'), and 'its better' (should be 'it's better'). While these errors are noticeable, they do not cause difficulty for the reader. To improve, focus on proofreading for subject-verb agreement and punctuation, specifically regarding apostrophes and common homophones like 'than/then'.
