Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Sir,

I am writing this letter to provides information about whether children's sports team should be sponsored instead of open-air concerts.

To begin with, there are myriad of merits to support sports activities of children. by providing them training, instructions as well as equipments we would be able to encourage them to something bigger in their future. For instance, these children can be famous on national level from our area.

Furthermore, hosting concerts could be beneficial too. As it brings all communities to an equal level and attracting visitors to the local area can be beneficial for generating a good amount of revenue for economy purpose.

Although open air concerts can bring communities together and generate good amount of money, sponsoring children activities has more long term benefits as it promotes better future for both our area and children too.

I would appreciate your attention to this information and look forward to receiving your response.

Your faithfully,

Afroza

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The letter addresses all three bullet points of the prompt. You clearly describe the benefits of the sports team and the concerts, and you provide a clear recommendation. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. For example, when discussing the sports team, you mention 'training' and 'equipments' but do not elaborate on how these specifically impact the children's development. Similarly, the economic argument for the concerts is quite brief. To reach a higher band, you should expand on your points with more specific examples or explanations to ensure the ideas are fully developed rather than just stated.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs for each point, and a conclusion. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'To begin with', 'Furthermore', and 'Although' to signal transitions between ideas. However, the flow is occasionally mechanical, and some sentences lack smooth connections. For instance, the transition between the benefits of sports and the specific example of national fame is a bit abrupt. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the different requirements of the task, which helps the reader follow your argument easily.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, such as 'myriad of merits', 'revenue', and 'long term benefits'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation. For example, you use 'equipments' (equipment is an uncountable noun) and 'economy purpose' (which is awkward; 'economic purposes' or 'the local economy' would be better). Additionally, 'encourage them to something bigger' is vague and lacks precision. While your vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning, you need to focus on using more precise collocations and avoiding basic grammatical errors with nouns to achieve a higher score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as the 'Although...' sentence in your conclusion. However, there are several grammatical errors that occur throughout the text. Examples include 'provides information' (should be 'provide'), 'children's sports team' (should be plural 'teams'), and 'Your faithfully' (should be 'Yours faithfully'). There are also issues with article usage and pluralization. While these errors do not impede communication, they are frequent enough to prevent a higher band score. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and proofreading for common slips would significantly improve your accuracy.
