Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear sir,

I am writing this letter to give you my opinion on this reliable and wise decision related to spend an amount of fund on children's sponsor team and concerts.

Sponsoring the sports team have several benefits such as it is very lucrative to encourage children to play sports because playing games are not essential for their physical well- being but also for their psychological health. Another advantage is that spending money on sports team can also provide uniforms, equipment and other necessary things which are helpful to improve their performance and confidence of learners.

On the other hand, benefits of paying for the concerts can also help the community. It provide entertainment for the people of different age groups and bring them together to enjoy the great experience by visiting concerts. It also attract nearby visitors which could increase businesses for local shops and restaurants. Even it give chance to the musician to perform in front of audience.

The company should spend the money on sponsoring the children’s sports team. As it has a longer-lasting impact on the community. It would encourage children to stay active, develop teamwork skills and build their confidence. Therefore, it is a better investment.

Yours faithfully,

Jaspreet Kaur

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response addresses all three bullet points of the prompt. You clearly describe the benefits of the sports team, summarize the benefits of the concerts, and provide a clear recommendation. The position is consistent throughout the letter. However, some ideas could be developed further; for instance, the explanation of why the sports team is a 'better investment' is somewhat brief. To reach a higher band, ensure that your arguments are fully extended with more specific examples or deeper reasoning. Overall, the task is fulfilled effectively with a clear tone appropriate for a formal letter.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter is logically organized into distinct paragraphs, each focusing on a specific requirement of the prompt. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'Another advantage is', 'On the other hand', and 'Therefore' to guide the reader. While the flow is generally clear, some transitions feel slightly mechanical. The use of referencing is mostly accurate, though the connection between sentences could be improved by varying the cohesive devices used. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the different sections of the letter, which helps the reader follow your argument easily.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'lucrative', 'psychological health', and 'long-lasting impact'. There are some minor inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'reliable and wise decision related to spend an amount of fund', which is slightly unnatural. Additionally, there are minor errors in collocation, such as 'playing games are not essential'. While you attempt to use more sophisticated vocabulary, some phrasing remains basic. To improve, focus on more natural collocations and ensure that word forms (e.g., 'spending' vs 'spend') are used correctly in context.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The letter contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While you successfully use complex sentences, there are frequent grammatical errors, particularly with subject-verb agreement (e.g., 'Sponsoring the sports team have', 'It provide', 'It also attract', 'It give chance'). These errors are noticeable but do not impede the overall meaning of your message. Punctuation is generally handled well. To achieve a higher band, you should focus on proofreading for basic grammatical accuracy, specifically ensuring that verbs agree with their subjects and that prepositions are used correctly after specific verbs.
