IELTS Writing Task 1 question

A large company in your area has decided to spend a certain amount of money, either to sponsor a local children's sports team for two years, or to pay for two open-air concerts. It has asked for feedback from the general public.

Write a letter to the company. In your letter

You do NOT need to write any addresses.

Begin your letter as follows:

Dear Sir or Madam,

Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Sir,

I am writing in order to give my opinion regarding two of your great thoughts for our community.

On the one hand, sponsoring the sports team will really help them to show their real potential, which would eventually open up their pathways to bigger stages. The company can take advantage of advertising their brand as lead sponsors, and as the whole nation is watching the sports, this can give them a lot of attention.

On the other hand, paying for the concerts will attract tourism into the community and taking advantage of this, the company can advertise their brands in both of their open-air concerts. This can help a lot in their marketing.

In my opinion, the company should sponsor the sports team because this investment would end up being a huge return for the company and the community both. The community will get a chance to generate more sportsmen in future, whereas the company can take advantage of advertising on the team's shirts.

Looking forward to seeing your good work towards our local community.

Thanking you,

Nishant

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response addresses all parts of the prompt effectively. You clearly describe the benefits of both the sports team sponsorship and the open-air concerts, and you provide a clear recommendation for the company to choose the sports team. The ideas are relevant and logically developed, such as mentioning brand visibility on shirts and the potential for community development. To reach a higher band, you could expand slightly more on the long-term impact of the concerts, perhaps by contrasting the immediate nature of a concert with the two-year duration of the sports sponsorship, which would provide a more nuanced comparison.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter is well-organized with a clear structure. You use appropriate paragraphing to separate the different requirements of the task. The use of cohesive devices such as 'On the one hand', 'On the other hand', and 'In my opinion' helps guide the reader through your argument. The progression of ideas is logical and easy to follow. To improve, ensure that the transition between sentences is smoother; for example, the phrase 'taking advantage of this' is slightly repetitive as it appears in both the second and third paragraphs. Using a wider variety of linking phrases would enhance the flow.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'potential', 'pathways', 'tourism', and 'investment'. However, the vocabulary is somewhat repetitive, particularly the frequent use of 'take advantage of' and 'advertise'. To improve, try to use more precise synonyms or collocations. For instance, instead of 'give them a lot of attention', you could use 'garner significant public interest'. The vocabulary is sufficient to communicate your message clearly, but it lacks the sophistication and variety required for a higher band score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as 'I am writing in order to give my opinion...' and 'The community will get a chance to generate more sportsmen in future, whereas the company can take advantage of...'. While your meaning is always clear, there are some minor grammatical inaccuracies, such as 'attract tourism into the community' (should be 'to the community') and 'generate more sportsmen in future' (should be 'develop more athletes'). Most sentences are error-free, but the range of complex structures is somewhat limited. Increasing the variety of your sentence patterns would help improve this score.
