IELTS Writing Task 1 question

A large company in your area has decided to spend a certain amount of money, either to sponsor a local children's sports team for two years, or to pay for two open-air concerts. It has asked for feedback from the general public.

Write a letter to the company. In your letter

• describe the benefits of sponsoring the sports team
• summarise the benefits of paying for the concerts
• say how you think the company should spend the money

You do NOT need to write any addresses.

Begin your letter as follows:

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing in response for your invitation for public comment on how your company's donation to the local community should be spent.

In my view, sponsoring the children's sport team would bring the greater benefit. Many families in this area cannot afford proper kit, qualified coaching or transport to away matches, and a two-year commitment would allow the club to plan ahead instead of struggling from one season to the next. Regular sports also keeps young people fit and teaches them discipline and teamwork at precisely the age when such habits are formed.

The concerts, of course, have their own attractions. They would appeal for a far wider, audience, including adults and elderly residents who would gain nothing from a children's team, and an open-air event would bring the whole town together for an evening.

Nevertheless, I would strongly encourage you to support the team. A concert is over in a few hours, whereas many invested in these children will shape their health and confidence for years to come.
