Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing to inform you about my opinion regarding sponsoring the sports team and paying for the concerts.

Sponsoring a sports team has several advantages. Such as identify the talented children and take them to the next stage. Also this helps to increase confident. Sports are crucial for everyday life and improve a lot of soft skills such as team work, stress management. Children can get benefits in the long run since sponsoring long lasts for almost two years.

However, paying for the concerts also give several benefits. Pay for two open-air concerts is massive. This also helps to identify talented children. Entertainment gives mental relaxation,

In my opinion I think company should spend the money on sponsoring the children's sports team. Concerts are one time but that one for two years. Children will get more benefits by the sponsorship. As sports equipments are expensive and unaffordable for poor families. Based on given reasons I think company should spend the money for sponsoring the sports team rather than paying for two open-air concerts.

Best wishes,

Chamath.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

You have addressed all three bullet points of the prompt, providing benefits for both options and a clear recommendation. However, the development of your ideas is somewhat limited. For instance, when discussing the sports team, you mention 'soft skills' but do not elaborate on how these are fostered. Similarly, the section on concerts is quite brief and lacks depth. To reach a higher band, ensure that each point is fully extended with specific examples or logical explanations. Your position is clear throughout the letter, which is a positive aspect of your response.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The letter is logically organized into paragraphs, with a clear introduction, body, and conclusion. You use some cohesive devices such as 'However' and 'In my opinion' to guide the reader. However, the flow within paragraphs is sometimes hindered by sentence fragments or awkward transitions, such as starting a sentence with 'Such as'. The use of referencing is occasionally unclear, which makes the progression of ideas feel a bit mechanical. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring each sentence is complete would enhance the overall coherence.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

Your vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing you to communicate your ideas clearly. You use some relevant terms like 'sponsoring', 'unaffordable', and 'mental relaxation'. However, there are instances of word-choice errors and awkward phrasing, such as 'long lasts for almost two years' instead of 'lasts for two years' and 'increase confident' instead of 'increase confidence'. To improve, focus on using collocations correctly and expanding your range of vocabulary to include more precise descriptive language rather than relying on basic terms.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

You demonstrate a mix of simple and some complex sentence structures. However, there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede the flow of reading. Examples include subject-verb agreement issues ('paying for the concerts also give') and incorrect sentence fragments ('Such as identify the talented children'). Punctuation is also inconsistent, particularly with the use of commas. While your meaning is generally clear, the frequency of these errors prevents the writing from reaching a higher band. Focusing on basic sentence construction and proofreading for subject-verb agreement would be highly beneficial.
