Student answer (Band 5.5)

Dear sir,

I am writing this letter to inform you about the sponsorship regarding open air concerts and sport team .These events are going to be held in community hall and playground subsequently. If you sponsor sports team it will help to get good feedback among youngsters and motivate them for athletes activities .There is lack of community sports team due to insufficient budget. In our society we have many hardworking and competitive athlethes but due to their financial crisis they cannot persue it as a career .Your funds motivate and help them to bring their spirit back and will give an identity to our society if they will play at national level.

Meanwhile if you will consume few part of donation for orginising event it will create a positive effect on community.Everyone can enjoy and take part of it .With this busy schedules these concerts will help to remove stress and spend some time with each other's.I tis very hard to get time for gatherings.Itwill also help to encourage social gathering.

According to my point of view ,company should spend half of its budget for sports while rest for orginising an event .There will be balance .I am looking forward for your support .

Yours sincerely

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses all three bullet points of the prompt: describing the benefits of the sports team, summarizing the concert benefits, and providing a clear recommendation. The ideas are relevant and the position is consistent throughout. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited; for instance, the explanation of the sports team's benefits could be more detailed regarding the 'two-year' aspect mentioned in the prompt. The recommendation is clear, though the reasoning behind splitting the budget is brief. Overall, the task is fulfilled, but the depth of argument could be improved to reach a higher band.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5

The letter is organized into logical paragraphs, each focusing on a specific requirement of the task. There is a clear progression of ideas from the introduction to the conclusion. However, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat mechanical and occasionally repetitive (e.g., 'It will also help...'). Some transitions between sentences feel abrupt, and the referencing is occasionally unclear, such as the use of 'subsequently' in the opening, which does not accurately convey the intended meaning. Despite these minor issues, the overall structure is coherent and easy to follow.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary used is generally adequate for the task, allowing the writer to convey their message clearly. There are some attempts at less common vocabulary, such as 'insufficient budget' and 'competitive', which are used correctly. However, there are several instances of awkward word choices and minor errors, such as 'athletes activities' instead of 'athletic activities' and 'consume few part of donation' instead of 'allocate a portion of the funds'. Spelling errors like 'persue' and 'orginising' also occur, though they do not impede communication.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The response demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the writer attempts complex sentences, there are frequent grammatical errors, particularly with articles ('the sports team'), subject-verb agreement, and punctuation (e.g., 'I tis'). Some sentences are slightly disjointed due to missing prepositions or incorrect word forms, such as 'due to their financial crisis they cannot persue it as a career'. Despite these errors, the meaning remains clear throughout the letter, and the errors do not significantly hinder the reader's understanding.
