IELTS Writing Task 1 question
A large company in your area has decided to spend a certain amount of money, either to sponsor a local children's sports team for two years, or to pay for two open-air concerts. It has asked for feedback from the general public.
Write a letter to the company. In your letter
- describe the benefits of sponsoring the sports team
- summarise the benefits of paying for the concerts
- say how you think the company should spend the money
You do NOT need to write any addresses.
Begin your letter as follows:
Dear Sir or Madam,
Student answer (Band 7.5)
Dear Sir,
I am writing in response to your request to public feedback regarding how your company should allocate its community funding.
Sponsoring the children’s sports team would brings benefits to the local area. It would provide young people with proper equipment, qualified coaching and a safe environment in which to develop both their physical fitness and important social skills such as teamwork and discipline. Over two years, this support could also encourage healthier lifestyles among children.
Funding a two open air concerts, on the other hand, would offer a different kind of value. Such event could bring the whole community together for an enjoyable evening, boost local businesses through increased footfall, and enhanced the area’s cultural reputation. However, the benefits would be short lived, lasting only for the duration of the events themselves.
In my opinion, the company should choose to sponsor the sports team. Investing in children’s long-term development offers far greater value than form of entertainment.
I hope this feedback proves useful. I would be happy to discuss it further.
Yours faithfully,
Neel Mistry.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0
You have successfully addressed all parts of the prompt. You clearly described the benefits of the sports team sponsorship and the concert funding, and you provided a clear, well-reasoned recommendation. Your ideas are relevant and well-developed, showing a good understanding of the task requirements. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter, and your position is consistent throughout the response. To reach a higher band, ensure that all points are balanced in length; your discussion of the sports team is slightly more detailed than the concert section, though this does not significantly detract from the overall quality of the response.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.0
The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs for each option, and a concluding recommendation. You use cohesive devices effectively, such as 'on the other hand' and 'however,' to transition between ideas and contrast the two options. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct points. The flow of information is smooth, and the reader can easily follow your argument from the opening statement to the final recommendation. The use of referencing is clear, and the overall structure is professional and easy to navigate.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.0
You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary appropriate for a formal letter, such as 'allocate,' 'community funding,' 'cultural reputation,' and 'long-term development.' There is a minor error in 'a two open air concerts,' where the article 'a' is redundant, and 'form of entertainment' is missing an article. However, these are minor slips that do not impede communication. Your word choice is generally precise and fits the context well. To achieve a higher score, try to incorporate more sophisticated collocations or less common lexical items to demonstrate greater flexibility.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures effectively. There are a few grammatical slips, such as 'would brings' (should be 'would bring') and 'enhanced the area’s' (should be 'enhance'). Despite these occasional errors, the majority of your sentences are error-free, and your control over complex structures is generally good. Punctuation is used correctly throughout the letter. The errors present are non-systematic and do not cause any difficulty for the reader, which is consistent with the criteria for a band 7 or 8 performance.
