IELTS Writing Task 1 question
A large company in your area has decided to spend a certain amount of money, either to sponsor a local children's sports team for two years, or to pay for two open-air concerts. It has asked for feedback from the general public.
Write a letter to the company. In your letter
- describe the benefits of sponsoring the sports team
- summarise the benefits of paying for the concerts
- say how you think the company should spend the money
You do NOT need to write any addresses.
Begin your letter as follows:
Dear Sir or Madam,
Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Sir or Madam,
I am writing to provide my positive feedback on the ideas that are planned by your company in our neighbourhood.
First of all, I appreciate taking time and considering helping our community to develop. To begin with, there are numerous benefits by sponsoring the local children's sport team. Firstly, this initiative enhances the sports abilities of the local children and also creates awareness on the importance of taking sport as an activity. Secondly, this also provides an opportunity for the underprivileged kids who do not have financial stability to support their talent in sports and continue to play.
On the other hand, organising concerts in the local area caters to different age groups and bring the whole community together to relax and enjoy music with their family and friends after their diligent work throughout the year. These concerts provide a platform for everyone to connect with their neighbours or people with similar interests.
However, I am very keen on utilising funds on sports teams for two years. It will be beneficial for our community children to increase their physical and mental strength.
Thank you for considering our opinions. Looking forward for your reply.
Yours faithfully,
Cathy karen

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
You have addressed all three bullet points of the task effectively. You clearly described the benefits of the sports team sponsorship, summarized the advantages of the concerts, and provided a clear recommendation for the company. Your position is consistent throughout the letter. The ideas are relevant and well-developed, particularly the focus on underprivileged children in the sports section. To reach a higher band, ensure that the tone remains consistently formal throughout; for instance, the opening could be slightly more professional, and the conclusion could be more polished.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs for each requirement, and a concluding recommendation. You use transition signals such as 'First of all', 'To begin with', 'Secondly', and 'On the other hand' to guide the reader through your arguments. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct ideas. The flow is generally smooth, although some cohesive devices are slightly mechanical. To improve, try to vary your linking phrases to create a more natural, sophisticated progression of ideas between sentences.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your ideas clearly. Phrases like 'underprivileged kids', 'financial stability', and 'diligent work' are used effectively. However, there are some minor inaccuracies in collocation and word choice, such as 'taking sport as an activity' (which sounds slightly unnatural) and 'utilising funds on' (where 'investing funds in' would be more precise). The vocabulary is adequate for the task, but incorporating more precise, topic-specific collocations would help elevate your score to the next level.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, and your meaning is always clear. There are some minor grammatical slips, such as 'the ideas that are planned by your company' (passive voice is a bit clunky here) and 'Looking forward for your reply' (the correct preposition is 'to'). Additionally, 'sport team' should be 'sports team'. Despite these occasional errors, your control of grammar is generally good, and the errors do not impede communication. Increasing the variety of complex sentence structures would further strengthen this score.
