Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing to provide my positive feedback on the ideas that are planned by your company in our neighbourhood.

First of all, I appreciate you taking time and considering helping our community to develop. To begin with, there are numerous benefits to sponsoring the local children's sports team. Firstly, this initiative enhances the sports abilities of the local children and also fosters awareness of the importance of taking up a sport. Secondly, this also provides an opportunity for the underprivileged kids who do not have financial stability to support their talent in sports and continue to play.

On the other hand, organising concerts in the local area caters to different age groups and allows community to relax and enjoy music with their family and friends after their diligent work throughout the year. These concerts provide a platform for everyone to connect with their neighbours or people with similar interests.

However, I am very keen on allocating funds to sports teams for two years. It will be beneficial for our community children to increase their physical and mental strength.

Thank you for considering our opinions. Looking forward to hearing from you.

Yours faithfully,

Cathy Karen

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

The response successfully addresses all three bullet points of the task. You clearly describe the benefits of sponsoring the sports team, such as enhancing skills and supporting underprivileged children, and summarize the benefits of the concerts, noting their ability to cater to different age groups and foster community connection. Your position on how the money should be spent is clearly stated and maintained throughout the letter. The ideas are relevant and sufficiently developed to meet the requirements of the task. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a company, and the structure is logical and easy to follow.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The letter is well-organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs for each requirement, and a concluding recommendation. You use a range of cohesive devices effectively, such as 'First of all', 'To begin with', 'Secondly', and 'On the other hand', which help guide the reader through your arguments. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct ideas. The progression of ideas is logical, moving from the benefits of the sports team to the concerts, and finally to your personal recommendation. The flow is smooth and the relationship between sentences is clear throughout the text.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary that is appropriate for the context of a formal letter. Phrases like 'fosters awareness', 'underprivileged kids', 'financial stability', and 'diligent work' show a good level of lexical control. While the vocabulary is generally accurate and natural, there is room to incorporate more sophisticated or less common collocations to reach the highest band. For instance, instead of 'positive feedback on the ideas', you could use 'express my support for the initiatives'. Overall, the vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning precisely and effectively without any errors that impede communication.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0

The response displays a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures. You use complex sentences effectively, such as 'this initiative enhances the sports abilities of the local children and also fosters awareness of the importance of taking up a sport.' Grammar and punctuation are generally accurate, with only minor slips that do not affect clarity. The majority of your sentences are error-free, and you maintain a consistent formal tone. To improve further, you could experiment with a wider variety of complex structures, such as conditional sentences or passive voice, to demonstrate greater grammatical flexibility.
