Dear Sir or Madam,
Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Sir or Madam,
I am writing to give my feedback about whether give donation to local children's sport team or finance open-air concerts.
Here, I would point out benefits of providing financial aid to underage sport team. Firstly, it will encourage local minors to take part in sport activities. As a result, they would develop healthy habit at an early age. Secondly, qualified sport players can be selected for further provincial sport competition and it will bring pride to our community.
On the other hand, extending financial help to organize open concert may have several upsides. Unlike sport team, this event can entertain large crowd of the area and not limited to certain number of people. Moreover. it would also increase employment and support local businesses to generate an extra revenue.
Although open-air concert would bring short-term advantages, it is completely good idea to invest in children sport tem in order to create healthy habits and long-term pride for our people.
I expect you would logically allocate funding considering my view.
Yours sincerely,
Steve

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The response successfully covers all the bullet points outlined in the prompt. You begin by stating the purpose of the letter and clearly describe the benefits of sponsoring the local sports team, such as encouraging healthy habits among minors and bringing pride to the community. You then summarise the benefits of the open-air concerts, including entertaining a larger crowd and supporting local businesses through increased revenue. Finally, you state your clear preference that the company should invest in the children's sports team. The position is maintained consistently throughout the letter, and the ideas are appropriately developed, fulfilling the requirements for Band 7.0.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The letter demonstrates a clear overall progression. Paragraphing is used logically, separating the introduction, the sports team benefits, the concert benefits, the recommendation, and the sign-off. Cohesive devices such as 'Firstly', 'Secondly', and 'On the other hand' are employed to guide the reader through your arguments. However, there are minor cohesive issues, such as a punctuation slip ('Moreover. it would...') and slightly abrupt transitions in places. Overall organisation is clear and logical, placing this securely in the Band 7.0 category.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to communicate your points clearly, including phrases like 'financial aid', 'provincial sport competition', and 'short-term advantages'. There are, however, several lexical and collocation errors, such as 'whether give donation' instead of 'whether to donate', 'underage sport team' instead of 'youth sports team', and 'children sport tem' with a spelling error. While these errors do not impede communication, they prevent the score from rising higher. The vocabulary used is adequate and generally appropriate for a semi-formal letter.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, such as conditional and concessive structures ('Although open-air concert would bring short-term advantages, it is completely good idea to invest...'). However, there are notable grammatical inaccuracies throughout the text, including missing articles ('give donation', 'organize open concert'), preposition errors ('give feedback about whether give'), and a missing verb element in the final sentence ('I expect you would logically allocate funding'). Because these errors occur frequently and cause minor hesitations, the grammar performance aligns with Band 6.0.
