Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear Sir or Madam,
I am writing to provide feedback for your company's decision to sponsor for a local children's sports team for two years or to invest in two open-air concerts.
To begin with, I am appreciate your decision to allocate money on good cause. I would say that sponsoring for the sports team offers several advantages. Investing in sports will not only allow children to develop their skills but also enhance their cooperation among young residents. Furthermore, if you plan to invest money on concerts, I believe it will enable a large number of individuals to experience different culture and a chance to explore new music. This may, in turn, promote social harmony and strengthen a healthy relationship within community. Nevertheless, I believe it is better to invest a certain amount of money for local children to learn sports. Learning sports at an early age have significant benefits, as they can train themselves to participate and represent themselves at international sporting events.
Thank you for your time and consideration.
Yours faithfully,
Payal Bhakta

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
You have successfully addressed all three bullet points outlined in the task instructions. In your letter, you described the benefits of sponsoring the sports team, such as allowing children to develop skills and enhancing cooperation. You also summarised the benefits of paying for the concerts, noting that it enables individuals to experience different cultures and promotes social harmony. Finally, you clearly stated your recommendation on how the company should spend the money by choosing the sports team for early childhood development. Your position is maintained throughout the response, and ideas are extended with relevant supporting points. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a company. To reach an even higher band, you could expand slightly more on the long-term community impact of both options.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
Your letter has a clear logical organisation and progression from introduction to conclusion. You effectively used cohesive devices and transition phrases such as 'To begin with', 'Furthermore', and 'Nevertheless' to guide the reader through your arguments. Paragraphing is used appropriately, with distinct sections for the introduction, the discussion of both options, your final recommendation, and the sign-off. However, referencing and cohesive links are occasionally slightly mechanical, which prevents the score from being higher. Overall, the message flows smoothly and the overall arrangement is coherent.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary suitable for this general task. You attempted some less common items such as 'allocate money', 'international sporting events', and 'social harmony'. However, there are some noticeable inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as writing 'sponsor for a local children's sports team' instead of 'sponsor a local children's sports team', and 'allocate money on good cause' instead of 'allocate money to a good cause'. These lexical errors do not impede communication, but they prevent entry into higher bands where precision and natural collocation are required.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
You have attempted a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, such as conditional structures ('if you plan to invest money on concerts, I believe it will enable...') and relative clauses. There are, however, several grammatical errors present in the text, including 'I am appreciate' instead of 'I appreciate', and the subject-verb agreement issue in 'Learning sports at an early age have significant benefits' instead of 'has'. Punctuation is generally fine, and while errors occur, they rarely impede overall communication and understanding.
