Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am witing to give some suggestions on your future spending for my town. As you no doubt know that my area is located in the country side and here we do have problems with children having no playgrounds to play football because of no past help given by the government. I believe if you would sponsor our local teenagers' team for two years, they could have access to better places to play and compete with more skilled teams and fortunately it will help them to polish and nurture their skills to the advance level. In this way they can feely focas on playing game rather than worrying abour neccessary equipments.

On the other hand, it is also true that if your company arrange two open air concerts, that will help our economy to grow. This is to say that this arrangements shall help people of my village to explore employment opportunities. Also, ample of people will visit these concerts and know more about my place.

I think you should distribute equal amount for both the things as this both have equal benefits. I hope you will think on this more carefully.

Yours faithfully,

Nitin

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response covers all three bullet points required in the task instructions. The student describes the benefits of sponsoring the local sports team, such as allowing teenagers to 'polish and nurture their skills' and access better playing places. The benefits of paying for the concerts are also summarised, noting economic growth and employment opportunities. Finally, a clear personal opinion is given regarding how the money should be spent by distributing equal amounts for both options. All parts are addressed appropriately for a General Training Task 1 letter, and the tone is suitable for communicating with a company.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter is organised into logical paragraphs, beginning with a standard opening and concluding with an appropriate sign-off. The progression of ideas is generally clear, moving from the sports team to the concerts, and finally to the recommendation. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'On the other hand' and 'This is to say that', though some transitions feel slightly mechanical or repetitive ('Also, ample of people...'). Paragraphing is used sufficiently to separate distinct points, making the letter easy to follow overall.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is adequate for the task, with attempts to use less common items such as 'nurture their skills', 'employment opportunities', and 'distribute equal amount'. However, there are noticeable spelling and word choice errors throughout the text, including 'witing' (writing), 'country side' (countryside), 'feely' (freely), 'focas' (focus), 'abour' (about), 'neccessary equipments' (necessary equipment), and 'ample of people' (plenty of people). Despite these inaccuracies, communication is not impeded, and the overall meaning remains clear.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The student attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating some control over grammar with conditional structures like 'if you would sponsor our local teenagers' team for two years, they could have access...'. However, there are frequent grammatical errors, such as spelling mistakes in verbs and nouns, incorrect preposition usage ('spending for my town'), and punctuation or minor syntactic slips. While these errors occur regularly, they do not prevent the reader from understanding the message, aligning well with the Band 6 descriptor.
