Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Sir/ Madam,

I am writing this letter today to present my feedback regarding the donation and sponsorship for either local children`s sports team for a couple of years, or two the open-air concerts payment.

It will be extremely beneficial for the youth to have a sports team in our neighborhood as they never had any. The reason i say this is because it will significantly reduce their screen-time and it will give them a reason to go out and make new group of friends and discover new hobbies and connect with new people. Moreover, this can significantly improve their both physical and mental health as well. they can learn a lot of soft skills through sports for example- Leadership skills, being a team player, networking and time management skills etc.

On the other hand, two open air-concerts sounds good as well, kids usually don`t get to go to the concerts much so it will make them really happy and have a fun rememberable experience of their lives.

In my opinion, the company should invest their money in sponsoring a local children`s sports team instead of open air-concerts. The reason is that it will help children in their overall wellbeing which includes their mental as well as physical growth.

This would be beneficial for them in their long term grown.

I hope you consider my feedback seriously.

Yours Truly,

Uroosa Fatima

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response covers all three bullet points required by the prompt successfully. The candidate describes the benefits of sponsoring the sports team, such as reducing screen time and improving physical and mental health, summarises the benefits of the open-air concerts as providing a fun and memorable experience, and clearly states an opinion on how the company should spend the money. The position is well-maintained throughout the letter, and the ideas are appropriately supported with logical reasoning about overall well-being and long-term growth. While some points could be slightly more expansive, all core requirements of General Training Task 1 are fully met, earning a solid band score for this criterion.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter follows a clear logical organization with an appropriate opening and closing. Ideas are grouped into coherent paragraphs, each addressing a specific aspect of the prompt. Cohesive devices such as 'Moreover', 'On the other hand', and 'The reason is that' are used to connect ideas, though referencing and transitions occasionally feel somewhat mechanical. Paragraphing is used sufficiently to structure the response, ensuring that the progression of thoughts from describing the team benefits to presenting the final recommendation is easy for the reader to follow.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The candidate demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully using terms such as 'significantly reduce', 'overall wellbeing', and 'soft skills'. There are some attempts at less common vocabulary, but occasional inaccuracies occur, such as 'rememberable' instead of 'memorable' and 'long term grown' instead of 'growth'. Spelling and word-choice errors are present, but they do not impede communication, and the tone remains appropriately polite and direct for a public feedback letter.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The writer uses a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, incorporating relative clauses and conditional ideas effectively. However, there are noticeable grammatical errors and punctuation issues throughout the text, including lowercase sentence beginnings ('they can learn...'), missing articles, and awkward prepositional phrasing like 'two the open-air concerts payment'. While these errors do not prevent comprehension, they occur frequently enough to prevent the writing from reaching a higher band. Complex structures are attempted, but control over them is inconsistent.
