Dear Sir or Madam,
Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Sir or Madam,
I am writing to give my opinion about how your company should spend the money to support the local community. In my view, sponsoring a children's sports team would be more beneficial.
Firstly, supporting a sports team can encourage children to stay healthy and active. It can also help them develop important skills such as teamwork, discipline and leadrship. Moreover, the money could be used to buy sports equipment, uniforms and provide better training facilities. As the sponsorship would last for two years, it could have a long term positive impact on local children.
On the other hand, paying for two open-air concerts would give local people an opportunity to enjoy entertainment and spend time together. These events could also attracts vistiors and provide additional business for local shops and resturants.
However, i believe sponsoring the soprts team would be a better use of the money because it would benefit children for a longer period and suppport their physical and personal development.
Yours faithfully,

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The response covers all three bullet points required by the prompt. You successfully describe the benefits of sponsoring the sports team, such as encouraging children to stay healthy and developing teamwork and leadership skills. You also summarise the benefits of the concerts, noting that they provide entertainment and boost local business. Finally, you clearly state your preference for how the money should be spent by choosing the sports team. Your position is maintained consistently throughout the letter. The ideas are relevant and appropriately extended, meeting the criteria for Band 7 well.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The letter is logically organised with a clear beginning, middle, and end, maintaining a natural progression throughout. Paragraphing is used effectively, with separate paragraphs for the sports team benefits, the concert benefits, and your final recommendation. Cohesive devices such as 'Firstly', 'Moreover', and 'On the other hand' are employed to guide the reader smoothly through the arguments, although spacing around punctuation needs slight care. Overall organisation is clear and logical, fulfilling the requirements for a Band 7 score.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to communicate your ideas clearly and with some flexibility, using phrases like 'long term positive impact' and 'physical and personal development'. However, there are a few minor spelling and typographical errors, such as 'leadrship' instead of 'leadership', 'attracts vistiors' instead of 'attracts visitors', and 'resturants' instead of 'restaurants'. Despite these occasional inaccuracies, your vocabulary is adequate for the task and allows the reader to follow your arguments without difficulty, aligning well with Band 6.5 or a solid Band 6.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms effectively, incorporating structures such as 'As the sponsorship would last for two years, it could have...' and 'In my view, sponsoring a children's sports team would be more beneficial.' There are some minor mechanical and grammatical slips, such as missing spaces after commas and a lowercase 'i' in 'However, i believe'. However, the majority of your sentences are error-free, and your grammatical control is good, enabling smooth communication throughout the response.
