Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing this letter to express my opinion to suggest spending money to host a concert or to conduct a sport team for school age children.

The sport team formation has numerous advantages like, children could get chance to learn new sport activities. Along with that, pupils would be more physically active and develop several intellectual skills.

The concerts has its own attraction. The benefits for concerts will refresh the adolescents and will give them a sense of independence to enjoy a music and get relaxed in this fast working phase of life.

According to my perspective, I would suggest to invest in sports team because it will help to numerous children to learn sport till two year period. The children could get more benefits from physical activities and will able gain a valuable expereience in this field. However, concerts will only held for 2-3 hours will not reflect much value than the sports activity.

I hope my suggestion help you to choose a best decision.

Yours faithfully,

Anjali Patel

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response successfully covers all bullet points required by the task prompt. You describe the benefits of sponsoring the sports team, such as allowing children to learn new sports and develop intellectual skills. You also summarise the benefits of the concerts, noting that they refresh adolescents and provide a sense of independence and relaxation. Finally, you clearly state your preference for the company to invest in the sports team over the two-year period, supported by reasons such as long-term value compared to a short 2-3 hour concert. The format of the letter is appropriate, including the required greeting and sign-off. However, some ideas could be slightly more extended to fully reach the higher bands.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The letter is generally coherent and follows a logical structure that mirrors the prompt requirements. Each paragraph addresses a distinct point: paragraph one introduces the purpose of the letter, paragraphs two and three discuss the sports team and concerts respectively, and paragraph four delivers your personal recommendation. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate ideas. However, cohesion at the sentence level is occasionally mechanical or faulty, such as in the transition 'The concerts has its own attraction. The benefits for concerts will refresh...', and some referencing is slightly awkward. Overall, the organizational progression is clear and easy to follow throughout.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully using terms like 'independent', 'adolescents', and 'perspective'. However, there are notable word choice and grammatical collocation errors, such as 'conduct a sport team' instead of 'sponsor a sports team', and 'expereience' which is misspelled. Other phrases like 'gain a valuable expereience' and 'help you to choose a best decision' highlight minor lexical and grammatical inaccuracies. While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly, these recurring slips prevent access to higher band scores.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

You attempt a mix of simple and complex sentence forms throughout the letter, such as conditional or dependent clauses ('because it will help to numerous children to learn sport'). There are, however, frequent grammatical errors and awkward phrasing, including subject-verb agreement issues like 'The concerts has its own attraction' and prepositional mistakes like 'invest in sports team' instead of 'sports teams'. Additionally, phrases like 'will able gain' miss auxiliary verbs or infinitives. Although these errors do not severely impede communication, they occur often enough to reflect a Band 5.5 level of grammatical control.
