Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing this to share my viewpoint on how your company should spends money it allocated to sponsor a local children's sports team for two years or to pay for two open-air concerts.

On the one hand, if the company spends money on sponsoring the sports team then it will encourage younger generation to do physical activities. Although, it will help them to become active and fit but it also teaches them qualities like teamwork, discipline and leadership.

On the other hand, organizing two open-air concerts will contributes towards city to get more visitors from other cities, which ultimately increases bussiness like restaurants and cafe. Moreover, it will gives an opportunity to local artists and musicians to showcase their talent and build confidence.

In my opinion, Rather then spending whole budget for just two open-air concerts for next two year, I think sponsoring for sports team for continuous next two years is more beneficial as it will helps children's to become physically fit and teach them responsibilities.

I hope the company will make wise decision. Thank you for giving me a chance to give my perspective.

Yours faithfully,

Harman

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response successfully covers all parts of the task prompt. You clearly described the benefits of sponsoring the sports team, noting how it encourages physical activity and teaches teamwork and discipline. You also summarised the benefits of paying for the concerts by mentioning how it attracts visitors and supports local businesses and artists. Finally, you clearly stated your personal recommendation that the company should choose the sports team sponsorship. The position is maintained consistently throughout the letter. The ideas are relevant and appropriately developed for a General Training Task 1 letter, fulfilling all bullet points adequately.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter is logically organised with a clear beginning, middle, and end, using an appropriate formal greeting and sign-off. Paragraphing is used sufficiently to separate different aspects of the task, such as introducing the topic, discussing the sports team, discussing the concerts, and giving the final recommendation. Cohesive devices are employed to guide the reader, such as 'On the one hand', 'On the other hand', and 'Moreover'. However, some logical transitions and referencing could be smoother, and there are minor instances where cohesion feels slightly mechanical.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary used is generally adequate for the task, with some attempts at less common lexical items such as 'showcase their talent' and 'physical activities'. However, there are a few noticeable word choice and collocation errors throughout the text, such as writing 'spends money it allocated' instead of 'spent the money it allocated', and 'bussiness' with a spelling error. Other phrases like 'increases bussiness like restaurants' lack precision. Despite these occasional inaccuracies, the vocabulary is sufficient to communicate your ideas clearly to the reader.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

You have attempted a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as conditional clauses ('if the company spends money... then it will encourage') and relative clauses. However, several grammatical errors persist throughout the letter. Examples include 'how your company should spends money' (incorrect verb form), 'Although, it will help them to become active and fit but it also teaches them' (incorrect conjunction pairing), and 'it will helps children's' (subject-verb agreement and unnecessary plural possessive). Punctuation and article usage also need closer attention. These errors do not impede communication, but they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher band.
