Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Sir,

I am writing to share my viewpoint about the advantages of sports events. Firstly, sports can help today's generation to stay healthy as well as they can look forward for their future. youngsters can get opportunity to develop their skills, Such as, teamwork, cooperation and discipline.

In addition to this, open air concerts will be helpful for the local shop vendors in order to increase their businesses. Another reason is concerts are a source of the entertainment and build stronger relationship in between the local community. This is a chance to attract tourists, which can be helpful for the development of the city.

Both sports events and air concerts have merits. However, In my opinion your company should spend money on the sports event, this is because it will last long for two years as compare to open air concerts. Moreover, it will be helpful to develop youngsters physical and mental health.

Thank you for your consideration,

Your faithfully,

Sukhveer Kaur.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response covers all parts of the task well. You successfully described the benefits of sponsoring the sports team, such as developing teamwork, cooperation, and discipline, and summarised the advantages of paying for concerts, including boosting local businesses and entertaining the community. Finally, you clearly stated your personal preference for the sports sponsorship and supported this choice with relevant reasons like the two-year duration and health benefits. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a company, and the position is consistent throughout. Although some ideas could be slightly more expanded to reach higher bands, the requirements of the prompt are fully met, earning a solid band score.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The letter is organised into clear paragraphs that separate the different parts of the prompt: sports benefits, concert benefits, and your final recommendation. You use basic cohesive devices and transition markers such as 'Firstly', 'In addition to this', and 'Moreover' to guide the reader through your arguments. However, referencing and transitions are sometimes a bit mechanical or abrupt, for instance, 'Both sports events and air concerts have merits. However, In my opinion your company should spend money on the sports event, this is because it will last long...' contains punctuation and comma splice issues that slightly disrupt the flow. Overall, the logical progression is evident, and paragraphing is used sufficiently to structure the letter.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate vocabulary range for the task, attempting some less common phrases such as 'today's generation', 'local shop vendors', and 'stronger relationship'. However, there are notable word choice and collocation inaccuracies throughout the text, such as 'air concerts' instead of 'open-air concerts', 'source of the entertainment' instead of 'a source of entertainment', and 'last long for two years as compare' instead of 'last for two years compared to'. Spelling is generally accurate, but these lexical errors and awkward collocations place the response firmly in the band 6 category.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

You attempt a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, such as 'I am writing to share my viewpoint about...' and 'Another reason is concerts are a source of the entertainment and build stronger relationship...'. However, there are frequent grammatical errors, including missing articles ('a source of the entertainment'), incorrect prepositions ('in between the local community' instead of 'within'), and punctuation errors like comma splices (e.g., 'sports events and air concerts have merits. However, In my opinion...'). Furthermore, there are awkward phrasings like 'look forward for their future'. These errors sometimes cause slight hesitation for the reader, though they do not impede overall communication.
