Dear Sir or Madam,
Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Sir,
I have recently come across your company's decision to either sponsor a children's local team or to pay for two open air concerts. I think this initiative is praise worthy and both are significant for us.
It is a great initiative to sponsor a children's local sports team as it would help them play stress free for two years as well as acquiring multiple facilities that comes with it. They would get a chance to get new things that would boost their confidence as well as new clothes which would make them look presentable. Another advantage is that they could hire a professional trainer that would help them with techniques, improve their mistakes and guide them better. This would be essential fot them so they could improve the game and get a chance to participate globally. I believe this would give your company a greater advantage because everyone would learn how you sponsored the team and made their lives significantly easier without any financial burden.
On the other hand, if you pay for the two open air concerts so that would lead to a delighted experience for the people as it has many advantages. It would give a chance to people to enjoy themselves and the popularity of concerts is huge so there would be an enormous amount of tickets sold that could be used to fund charities or for some other useful purpose such as to lower poverty. This would act as a great initiative and people would be able to enjoy as well as a purpose would be fulfilled too.
I personally believe that there is a lack of resources in our country for talented children in the sports team. It would be great to invest in their team so they would be able to perform better and get more motivated by this. Thanks and regards

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The response successfully covers all parts of the prompt in a formal semi-formal style, achieving a clear purpose throughout. The writer describes the benefits of sponsoring the sports team, such as enabling them to play stress-free and hire a professional trainer. They also summarise the benefits of the concerts, including generating ticket sales for charity. Finally, the writer clearly states their personal recommendation that the company should fund the sports team. Ideas are extended and well-supported, with good explanation of why the sports sponsorship provides long-term value to both the children and the company. The tone is appropriate for a public consultation letter. This performance satisfies the criteria for Band 7.0.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The letter demonstrates a clear overall progression of ideas, with each paragraph serving a distinct function in addressing the prompt. The introduction sets the context, the body paragraphs cover the two options separately, and the conclusion delivers the final verdict. Cohesive devices are used effectively, such as 'On the other hand' and 'Another advantage is', although paragraphing and transitions are at times slightly formulaic. Referencing is generally clear, though minor improvements in linking sentences could enhance the flow. Overall, the structural arrangement meets the descriptors for Band 7.0.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The student uses a sufficient range of vocabulary to communicate ideas clearly and with some precision. Phrases such as 'praise worthy', 'financial burden', and 'talented children' demonstrate an adequate resource for the task. However, there are some minor word-choice inaccuracies and awkward collocations, such as 'acquiring multiple facilities that comes with it' instead of 'obtaining the necessary equipment', and a typo in 'fot them' instead of 'for them'. Despite these occasional errors, the vocabulary is varied enough to allow flexible expression, fitting the Band 6.5 descriptor well, rounded to 6.5.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The writer employs a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, including conditional or multi-clause sentences like 'if you pay for the two open air concerts so that would lead to a delighted experience'. There are several grammatical errors and punctuation slips present, such as unnecessary comma splices, the redundant 'so' in the aforementioned conditional structure, and spelling slips like 'praise worthy' as two words. While these errors occur regularly, they rarely impede overall communication. The grammatical control is representative of a solid Band 6.0 performance.
