Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am pleased to hear that this year Pepsi has decided to sponsor an event hosted by the city of Cambridge and is willing to receive residents' views on the two options. For the first option, I agree that supporting children's sports team is a great initiative. It not only benefits young athletes, but also encourages new participants. Did you know, John Jackson, who used to play for Hamilton's local soccer team now represents Canada at the FIFA World Cup?

However, in my opinion, open-air concerts have more substantial benefits. The most important one being the fact that it helps grow the local economy. Family-owned businesses such as coffee shops and restaurants see a rise in customers due to such events. This is a crutial factors as a large number of businesses still haven't recovered the losses they had witnessed during the pandemic. Additionally, a surge in rent means less profit for the owners.

Based on these points, I strongly believe that Pepsi should sponsor open-air concerts as this will have long-term financial impact on the city.

Yours faithfully,

Mihir

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

You successfully covered all parts of the task requirements. You described the benefits of sponsoring the children's sports team by mentioning how it benefits young athletes and encourages new participants. You also summarised the benefits of the open-air concerts, noting their positive economic impact on family-owned businesses. Finally, you clearly stated your opinion on how the company should spend the money. Your position is maintained consistently throughout the letter, and your ideas are extended with logical support. However, your response includes a direct question to the reader ('Did you know...'), which is slightly unsuited to the formal tone expected in this type of transactional letter, but overall your task response meets the requirements of a Band 7.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

Your letter shows clear logical organisation and progression throughout. You used standard paragraphing effectively, separating your introduction, the discussion of the sports team, the evaluation of the concerts, and your final recommendation. Cohesive devices are used reasonably well, such as 'For the first option', 'However', and 'Additionally', ensuring that relationships between ideas are clear. Referencing is mostly appropriate, and the flow of information is easy to follow. While referencing could be slightly more sophisticated to reach higher bands, the overall arrangement is coherent and well-managed, aligning well with the Band 7 descriptor.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrated a sufficient range of vocabulary with some flexibility and precision, employing terms like 'initiative', 'substantial benefits', 'surge in rent', and 'long-term financial impact'. You successfully attempted some less common lexical items. However, there is a spelling error ('crutial' instead of 'crucial') and a slight grammatical slip with singular/plural agreement in 'a crutial factors' (should be 'factor'). Despite these occasional inaccuracies, your vocabulary is adequate for the task and allows clear communication of your ideas, which is characteristic of Band 6.5 to Band 7.0 performance.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You used a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including subordinate clauses and relative structures like 'who used to play for Hamilton's local soccer team'. Your control of punctuation is generally good, and your sentences are mostly clear. There are a few grammatical errors, such as 'children's sports team' lacking a determiner (should be 'a children's sports team') and the spelling/agreement issue in 'a crutial factors'. However, these errors rarely impede communication and the majority of your sentences are clear and well-formed. Your grammatical control fits comfortably within the Band 6.5 or 7.0 range, and a 6.5 is awarded here.
