Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing in response to the company's decision, in which the business is asking for advice on whether to invest a considerable amount of money in the children's sports event or to pay for two live concerts.

At the outset, the favourable consequences of investing money in the sports team are not only beneficial to boost children's physical strength, but also encourage them to take part in outdoor and sports activities. In addition, children get the opportunity to interact with each other outside school hours, which strengthens their bond and fosters teamwork.

On the other hand, sponsoring money for live concerts provides an opportunity for employees and the community to escape from their busy schedules. Attending lively concerts refreshes our minds and releases stress from everyday tasks and responsibilities. Moreover, open-air concerts are a good source of entertainment for people of all ages.

Lastly, I personally believe that sponsoring money in children's sports teams will be more beneficial, as sports are an extremely essential part of students' lives. Sports provide necessary benefits to children's health and are helpful in diverting their attention from unnecessary and bad habits.

I hope my feedback provided valuable suggestions. Thank you for your time and consideration.

Yours faithfully,

Jessica Smith

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

The response successfully addresses all three bullet points outlined in the prompt. First, the writer outlines the advantages of sponsoring the children's sports team, noting physical health and teamwork benefits, as seen in the phrase 'boost children's physical strength'. Second, the benefits of the concerts are summarised effectively, focusing on stress relief and entertainment for the community. Finally, the writer clearly states their personal preference regarding how the money should be spent, justifying it with sound reasoning about youth development. The tone is appropriately formal for a letter to a company, and a clear position is maintained throughout. The response covers all aspects well, earning a solid Band 7.0 for Task Achievement.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The letter exhibits a clear logical organisation and progression. The response is divided into logical paragraphs, each serving a distinct function corresponding to the prompt requirements. Transitional phrases such as 'At the outset', 'In addition', 'On the other hand', and 'Lastly' are used to guide the reader smoothly through the argument, though some transitions are slightly formulaic. Referencing and substitution are handled adequately, and paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the introduction, body points, and conclusion. Overall, the structural flow is clear and cohesive, aligning well with the Band 7.0 descriptors for Coherence and Cohesion.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.5

The student demonstrates a sufficient range of vocabulary to allow for some flexibility and precision. Phrases like 'favourable consequences', 'interact with each other', and 'everyday tasks and responsibilities' show an adequate command of language suitable for a General Training task. However, there are some minor collocation inaccuracies, such as 'sponsoring money' instead of 'spending money' or 'sponsoring', and 'diverting their attention from unnecessary and bad habits', which sound slightly unnatural. Despite these occasional lexical slips, the vocabulary used is more than adequate to convey the message clearly, justifying a Band 6.5.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 7.0

The writer employs a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as the relative clause in 'children get the opportunity to interact with each other outside school hours, which strengthens their bond'. There are instances of good grammatical control, but also a few minor structural awkwardness issues and preposition errors, such as 'investing money in the sports team' compared to the slightly awkward 'sponsoring money for live concerts'. Punctuation is generally accurate, and errors do not impede communication. The presence of frequent error-free sentences alongside minor slips places this response firmly in the Band 7.0 range for Grammatical Range and Accuracy.
