Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing to provide you few suggestions on how you can best utilise your fund for children's sport game or to pay for two open-air concerts.

On one hand, investing money in sports team help the kids to learn how to coordinate with each other and assist them in confidence building. Other thing is that, they will have a chance to participate in such tournaments which may be not possible for some kids to actively join them because of financial background.

On the other side, if a company pay for concerts this will help the community people to enjoy their leisure time at the fullest and assist them in networking; as nowadays it is very difficult to connect with the people. On top of that, it also brings the job opportunity for the people living nearby.

After considering advantages of both, I think investing money in building a team for kids sport would be the wise option, because they are the future of the society and whatever they learn now will help them to build their endeavours.

I hope my feedback sounds reasonable to you, if you have any question relating to this please feel free to reach out.

Yours faithfully,

Hamza

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

You successfully covered all parts of the prompt in your letter. You began by addressing the sports team sponsorship, detailing benefits such as teamwork and confidence-building. You then summarised the benefits of the open-air concerts, including leisure enjoyment and networking opportunities. Finally, you clearly stated your personal recommendation that the company should fund the children's sports team because they represent the future of society. Your tone is appropriately polite and formal for a business correspondence letter. Your ideas are relevant and generally well-developed, earning a solid band score for addressing every bullet point required by the task instructions effectively.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

Your letter is organised into clear paragraphs that follow a logical progression from introduction to body paragraphs discussing each option, followed by your final recommendation and a polite sign-off. You made use of standard cohesive devices and transition phrases such as "On one hand", "On the other side", and "After considering advantages of both" to guide the reader through your arguments. However, there are some minor mechanical links and occasional slight awkwardness in referencing. Overall, the structure is coherent and the layout is appropriate for a General Training task 1 letter, maintaining clear logical flow throughout.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You demonstrated an adequate range of vocabulary for this task, successfully employing terms such as "utilise", "financial background", "leisure time", and "endeavours". However, there are some minor lexical and collocational inaccuracies. For instance, writing "provide you few suggestions" should be "provide you with a few suggestions", and "children's sport game" would be more natural as "children's sports teams". You also wrote "bring the job opportunity", which is slightly unnatural compared to "create job opportunities". Despite these occasional errors, your vocabulary is sufficient to convey your ideas clearly and demonstrates an attempt to use less common expressions.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You utilised a mix of simple and complex sentence structures throughout your response, such as conditional clauses and relative clauses ("which may be not possible for some kids..."). However, there are several grammatical errors and awkward structures present. For example, you wrote "help the kids to learn", which should omit 'to' after 'help', and "which may be not possible" should be "which might not be possible". Additionally, articles are missing or misused in places, such as "investing money in sports team" instead of "a sports team". Although these errors occur regularly, they do not impede communication, and the meaning of your letter remains entirely clear.
