Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear Sir or Madam,
I have seen an advertisement that XYZ Ltd. wanted to spend a good amount of money on sponsoring a local kids sports team for couple years or wanted to arrange two open air concerts. This is wonderfull idea to help your socity in a certain way.
I would like to say it will be much appreciated if you sponsor our kids sports team because some parents could not afford to send their kids for sports. Due to lack of financial resources. If everything will be free kids will be motivate to play more sports and would be a best idea to create our own team for national games.
On the other hand, open air concert would be fun for the local people. I do not think so there are any free concert in our society, so people will be happy and they will enjoy it.
According to me, it would be much appreciated to help the children's sports team for two years. This is much needed in this time.
Your Sincerely,
Jay

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
The writer covers all three bullet points required in the prompt. First, the benefits of sponsoring the sports team are described, focusing on helping parents who cannot afford sports fees and creating a team for national games. Second, the benefits of the concerts are briefly summarised, noting that it would bring fun and happiness to local people. Finally, the writer clearly states their recommendation that the company should choose the sports team. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a company, beginning with 'Dear Sir or Madam' and ending correctly. While some ideas like the national games are slightly brief, all parts of the task are addressed adequately, fulfilling the requirements for Band 6.0.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The letter has a coherent overall arrangement with a clear beginning and ending. Paragraphing is attempted to separate different ideas, such as the sports team and the concerts. However, the logical progression is sometimes hindered by abrupt transitions and faulty sentence linking, such as 'Due to lack of financial resources' standing as a sentence fragment. Cohesive devices are used simply, for instance 'On the other hand' to introduce the second option. Paragraph breaks are slightly inconsistent, but the overall structure remains clear enough to be easily understood, aligning well with the descriptors for a Band 6.0 score.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.5
The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully communicating key ideas. There are several spelling and word-choice errors, such as 'wonderfull' instead of wonderful, 'socity' instead of society, 'couple years' instead of a couple of years, and 'motivate' instead of motivated. Despite these errors, meaning is rarely impeded. The writer attempts some less common phrases like 'financial resources' and 'much appreciated,' though control over collocation and spelling is inconsistent. This performance sits comfortably within the Band 5.5 to 6.0 range, demonstrating sufficient but imperfect lexical control.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The response features a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating some variety. However, there are frequent grammatical errors and punctuation slips throughout the text. Examples include 'XYZ Ltd. wanted to spend' (tense shift issues), 'some parents could not afford to send their kids for sports. Due to lack of financial resources' (fragmented sentence), and 'If everything will be free kids will be motivate' (conditional structure error and passive voice mistake). Additionally, 'According to me' is slightly unnatural phrasing. While these errors are noticeable, they do not impede overall communication. The mixture of correct simple structures and flawed complex structures reflects a Band 5.5 performance.
