Dear Sir or Madam,
Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Sir,
It came to our knowledge that your company has a spare budget that needsto be allocated and I believe that both of the options are actually beneficial. Deciding between sponsoring a local children's sports team or paying for two open-air concerts will bring a unique exprience to our people. This letter aims to help you decide which option is to take.
Sponsoring a local children's sports team for two years will lift a big rock of burden not only to the participants but also to their families. We believe that it is not easy to produce a certain budget for them especially for their equipments and transportation to competitions. These children are the pride of our community and by supporting them, their potentials can shine more. For example, they weren't able to compete to the recently concluded provincial games due to insuffenciency of funds which should have able to let them experience going head to head with other competitors from different side of the country.
On the other side, paying for concerts will bring a different kind of experience to people in our community. This can alleviate stress from working long hours or from studying the whole year. Concerts are not just form of entertainment but also increases the chance for people to socialize to one another.
If i am to share my opinion, I believe that supporting a Local Children's Sports Team will be more meaningful than paying for concerts. These children will probably be ecstatic to know that they wouldn't have to worry about their budget for the next two years. Thus, they can focus in training and polishing their craft.
I hope this letter helps you decide on what to do.
Sincerely Yours,
Edliz Ann Blando

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
The response fully covers all bullet points required by the task prompt. The writer successfully describes the benefits of sponsoring the sports team, summarises the benefits of paying for the concerts, and provides a clear recommendation on how the company should spend the money. The position is clearly stated and maintained throughout the letter. The ideas are extended and supported well, such as when providing the example of the provincial games. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a company, despite a minor slip in the opening salutation. Therefore, this performance meets the criteria for Band 7.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The letter exhibits a clear logical organisation and progression throughout. The response is divided into logical paragraphs, with an introduction, body paragraphs addressing each option, a concluding recommendation, and a sign-off. Cohesive devices such as 'On the other side', 'Thus', and 'For example' are used effectively to guide the reader through the arguments. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately, ensuring that each main idea is handled in its own distinct section. Minor issues with referencing and cohesion do not detract from the overall clarity, placing this response solidly at Band 7.
Lexical Resource: Band 7.0
The student demonstrates a sufficient range of vocabulary for flexibility and precision, using less common items such as 'alleviate stress', 'insufficiency of funds', and 'polishing their craft'. However, there are some minor lexical inaccuracies and spelling errors, such as 'exprience' instead of 'experience' and 'insuffenciency' instead of 'insufficiency'. Word choice and collocations are generally natural, though occasional slight awkwardness occurs, such as 'lift a big rock of burden'. Overall, the lexical range is adequate to convey precise meaning, supporting a Band 6.5 or 7.0 score; given the solid attempt at less common phrases, a Band 7.0 is well deserved.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
The writer uses a mix of simple and complex sentence forms effectively, incorporating conditional clauses ('If i am to share my opinion...') and relative clauses. There are some grammatical errors, such as 'budget that needsto be' (subject-verb agreement/spacing error), 'compete to the recently concluded' (preposition choice), and 'which should have able to let them' (awkward verb structure). However, frequent error-free sentences exist and these minor errors rarely impede communication, allowing the reader to follow the arguments smoothly. This performance aligns well with the Band 6.5 descriptor, rounded to a Band 6.0 due to the accumulation of grammatical slips.
