Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Sir or Madam,
I am a current resident of the Queens area. I am writing this letter to give my feedback on the sponsorship opportunity to my area.
The Marcus company has decided to allocate a certain amount of money to either the sports team or the open-air concerts. Donating money to the sports team has several benefits, it gives younger children the ability to accomplish their sporting dreams. Many of the children in the area, have good sporting skills but lack good facilities and protective wears. Funding the sports team, will allow these local children practise in an arena that is well-equipped. It will also allow these children play their sports games while being well protected.
On the other hand, funding the two open-air concerts is also beneficial. These concerts will help to generate funds for both the Marcus company and the Queen's area. In the past, several top artist and dancers requests to host shows in the area. Due to the terrible state of the concerts arena, they have to but a halt on their plans.
Although, I genuinely think the company should spend the money on the sports team. This will give the children the ability to actualize their dreams.
Thank you very much for your time. I hope this letter is beneficial to the company.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
The response covers all three bullet points required in the task instructions well. You successfully describe the benefits of sponsoring the sports team, such as giving children the ability to accomplish sporting dreams and helping them access protective wear and better facilities. You also summarise the benefits of paying for the concerts, noting how they generate funds and attract top artists, and you clearly state your personal preference for the sports team in the final paragraphs. The position is maintained consistently throughout the letter. The ideas are relevant and generally well-developed, although some points, such as the concert benefits, could have been slightly more elaborated to reach a higher band. Overall, the task requirements are thoroughly met.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The letter follows a clear logical organization with an appropriate opening and closing, and a standard semi-formal tone. Information is grouped into sensible paragraphs addressing distinct parts of the prompt, with a clear progression of ideas from the description of the sports team to the concerts and finally your personal recommendation. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'On the other hand' and 'Although', though paragraph transitions and referencing could sometimes be smoother. For instance, the sentence 'Although, I genuinely think...' uses a transitional marker inappropriately as a sentence fragment. Despite minor mechanical flaws in cohesion, the overall arrangement is coherent and easy to follow.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, allowing you to convey your message clearly. You attempt some less common items such as 'allocate', 'accomplish', and 'generate funds'. However, there are notable word choice, collocation, and phrasing errors throughout the text. For example, writing 'protective wears' instead of 'protective wear' (uncountable), 'practise in an arena' where 'train' is more natural, and 'put a halt on their plans' instead of 'put a halt to'. Spelling and word formation are mostly fine, but these lexical inaccuracies restrict the score to a Band 6.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, incorporating relative clauses and conditional structures. However, there are several grammatical errors and punctuation lapses. For instance, comma splices and run-on structures appear, such as in 'Donating money to the sports team has several benefits, it gives younger children...'. Additionally, there are subject-verb agreement and preposition issues, such as 'artist and dancers requests' (should be plural 'artists' and past tense 'requested'), and 'children play their sports games' would be better phrased as 'children to play'. While these errors do not impede overall communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score.
