Dear Sir or Madam,
Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Sir or Madam,
I am writing to provide my feedback on whether spend money to sponsor a local sports team or to pay for two open-air concerts.
To begin with, many children in our neighbourhood aspire to be crickters in the near future. They need new bats, balls, stumps and flood lights to practice after sunset. Our local sports team is financially not capable to participate in competitions, but sponsoring them would solve this problem instantly.
However, to pay for two open-air concerts is more practical for members. They love hearing to songs from their favourite movies. It is a great leisure activity for them, as it strengthens the collaboration. We have a an auditorium in our society, which has a capacity for 100 people to enjoy music.
I would therefore request you to contribute equal money for both activities. Children and eldery people, both are crucial for our community and they need financial support for different purposes. Should you require more details or information about the cricket team or the auditorium hall, I am happy to assist you further.
I look forward to hearing from you.
Yours faithfully,
Smith Patel

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
The response successfully addresses all parts of the task. You clearly described the benefits of sponsoring the sports team, such as enabling children to practice with proper equipment like bats, balls, stumps, and floodlights. You also summarised the benefits of paying for the concerts, noting that it provides leisure activity, strengthens community collaboration, and fits the 100-person capacity of the local auditorium. Furthermore, you provided a clear personal recommendation on how the money should be spent by suggesting a split contribution. The purpose of the letter is evident throughout, adopting an appropriate semi-formal tone suitable for corresponding with a local company. All bullet points from the prompt are fully covered and well-supported with relevant ideas, demonstrating strong performance under this criterion.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.5
Your letter follows a clear logical organisation and progression. The response is divided into logical paragraphs, beginning with a standard opening, moving through the benefits of the sports team and concerts, offering your recommendation, and concluding appropriately. You use cohesive devices such as 'To begin with', 'However', and 'I would therefore request you to' to guide the reader smoothly through your arguments. Referencing is generally clear, and paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct ideas. Cohesion is managed effectively throughout the text, though transitions could occasionally be slightly more varied or subtle to achieve a higher band.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.5
You demonstrate an adequate and generally appropriate range of vocabulary for this general training task. You successfully use terms relevant to the context, such as 'neighbourhood', 'sponsor', 'financial support', 'leisure activity', and 'auditorium'. However, there are some minor lexical errors and awkward collocations, such as 'whether spend money' instead of 'whether to spend money', 'hearing to songs' instead of 'listening to songs', and 'eldery' which is a spelling error for 'elderly'. Despite these occasional inaccuracies, your vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly and effectively without impeding communication.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5
You make use of a satisfactory mix of simple and complex sentence forms. Examples of complex structures include 'I am writing to provide my feedback on whether spend money...' and 'We have an auditorium in our society, which has a capacity for 100 people...'. There are some grammatical errors, notably 'whether spend money' instead of 'whether to spend money', a slight error with the indefinite article in 'a an auditorium', and a minor punctuation or phrasing slip in 'Children and eldery people, both are crucial'. However, the majority of your sentences are clear, and these errors do not impede communication, showing a good level of control over basic and intermediate grammar.
