Begin your letter as follows:
Dear Sir or Madam,
Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear Sir or Madam,
I have taken recognizance of your intention to sponsor either a local children's sports team for two years or to pay for two open-air concerts. First of all, as Mayor of Port- louis district, I would like to express my heartfelt gratitude to this noble gesture of yours.
It would be beneficial for children in both cases. Firstly, sponsoring a sports team would enable the sports association to invest in better equipments and infrastructures like well maintained football playground, quality balls and a well equipped gymnasium. This will in turn motivate the children to develop the love for sports. In addition to this , it would also help them to relax after a stressful day at school rather than spending their time on mobile which is the craze among youngters nowadays.
Your second proposal about the open-air concerts is also a fantastic idea as not every children have the opportunity to assist a concert at their young age. We already have SSS gymnasium which could easily accomodate about 250 children. There are some arrangements that will need to cater for and you could count on me for that.
In my opinion, as both ideas are fantastic, I would suggest if you could consider sponsoring for 1 year for the sports team together with 1 concert. In this regards, all children who are fan of sports or not could benefit altogether.
Hence, kindly consider my proposal and let me know of the decision reached by you.
Thanking you again.
Kind regards,
Faranaz J

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
The response successfully addresses all parts of the prompt, fulfilling the requirements for a general correspondence task. You adopt a clear persona as the Mayor of Port-louis district and cover all required bullet points: you describe the benefits of sponsoring the sports team, summarise the benefits of the concerts, and give your own recommendation on how the company should spend the money. However, some ideas are more fully developed than others. For instance, while the benefits of the sports team are explained with details about equipment and reducing mobile phone use, the benefits of the concerts are somewhat underdeveloped, relying on a brief mention that children do not often experience concerts and that a gymnasium can accommodate them. To reach a higher level, all parts of the prompt would need to be extended with fully elaborated supporting details and consistent depth throughout.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
Your letter maintains a coherent overall arrangement with a logical progression of ideas from acknowledging the company's initiative to discussing each option in turn, before concluding with a balanced recommendation. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate each main point, such as the sports team in the second paragraph and the concerts in the third. Cohesive devices are employed to link your thoughts, such as 'First of all', 'In addition to this', and 'Your second proposal'. Nevertheless, cohesion sometimes feels a bit mechanical or faulty. For example, referencing is occasionally imprecise, as seen in phrases like 'There are some arrangements that will need to cater for' where the grammatical subject relationship is slightly unclear. To achieve a higher standard, cohesive relationships would need to flow more naturally and flexibly without relying on formulaic transitions.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task and successfully attempt less common lexical items, such as 'recognizance', 'heartfelt gratitude', and 'accommodate'. Your vocabulary choices communicate your meaning effectively to the reader. However, there are some noticeable inaccuracies in word choice, collocation, and word form that prevent you from reaching a higher band. For example, you use 'equipments' as a plural noun (equipment is uncountable), wrote 'youngters' instead of 'youngsters', and used 'assist a concert' (a French-leaning false friend; in English, people 'attend' concerts). Additionally, phrases like 'sponsoring for 1 year' contain minor lexical or prepositional awkwardness. To improve, you need to use less common vocabulary with greater precision regarding collocation and maintain strict control over word forms and spelling.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
Your writing displays a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating your ability to construct compound and subordinate clauses, such as 'I would like to express my heartfelt gratitude to this noble gesture of yours' and 'This will in turn motivate the children to develop the love for sports.' You maintain good control over basic grammar and sentence structure, and the errors present do not impede communication. There are, however, some errors in grammar and punctuation. For instance, you wrote 'not every children have' (children is plural, so it should be 'not all children have' or 'not every child has'), omitted the preposition in 'need to cater for' (should be 'need to be catered for'), and inserted an unnecessary space before the comma in 'In addition to this ,'. To elevate your grammar score, you would need to produce a higher proportion of error-free complex sentences and eliminate persistent agreement and passive voice slips.
