Dear Sir or Madam,
Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Sir or Madam,
I am writing in regards to your request for feedback regarding your sponsorship for children's sports team or two concerts. I would like to give my opinion on the subject.
It is a commendable initiative to support children's sports team as it would foster fitness among young children without breaking their bank. Additionally, it promotes healthy competition among teams from surrounding neighborhoods, and it could potentially lead to them playing on the national level one day.
As for the concerts, they provide a leisure and entertainment for the entire neighborhood without only targeting the youngsters. It would strengthen the ties among locals with a facility like this one where residents get closer and have a relaxing time.
Although both options have their own benefits, however, I am more inclined towards the the latter option. Concerts, in my opinion, are a refreshing activity catering all age groups and would bring the entire community together.
I hope you would find my suggestions useful in finalizing your decision.
Kind regards,

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
The response successfully addresses all parts of the task by describing the benefits of the sports sponsorship, summarising the advantages of the concerts, and clearly stating a final preference for the latter option. Your position is maintained consistently throughout the letter. The ideas are extended and supported, such as when you explain how the children's team could potentially reach a national level, and how the concerts cater to all age groups to bring the community together. However, some points show a slight tendency to over-generalise rather than offering fully rounded elaboration, which keeps the response within this well-developed band. To push toward the highest level, you could provide even more specific, extended detail on how the community would benefit from the chosen option.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
There is a clear logical organisation and progression throughout the letter, opening with an appropriate greeting and a clear statement of purpose. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and effectively, separating the introduction, the two proposals, your final recommendation, and the closing sign-off. You make good use of cohesive devices to guide the reader, such as 'Additionally', 'As for the concerts', and 'Although both options have their own benefits'. However, there is a minor cohesive misstep in the final body paragraph with the inclusion of 'however' immediately following 'Although', which is slightly redundant. Overall, referencing and information flow smoothly from beginning to end, reflecting a clear structural control.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.5
You demonstrate an adequate and generally appropriate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully attempting less common phrasing such as 'commendable initiative', 'foster fitness', and 'catering all age groups'. Communication is never impeded by your word choices. However, there are a few minor inaccuracies and awkward collocations that prevent a higher score, such as 'without breaking their bank' (the idiomatic expression is 'break the bank'), 'provide a leisure and entertainment' (which should be 'provide leisure and entertainment'), and the repetition of the word 'the' in 'towards the the latter option'. To achieve a higher band, focus on precise natural collocations and eliminating minor slips in word form.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5
The letter features a satisfactory mix of simple and complex sentence structures, showing good control over punctuation and overall sentence architecture. You successfully deploy complex forms such as concessive clauses ('Although both options have their own benefits...') and relative clauses. There are some minor grammatical errors present, such as missing articles ('children's sports team' instead of plural 'teams' or 'a team', and 'catering all age groups' lacking the preposition 'to'). Nevertheless, these errors are relatively infrequent and do not impede communication. To reach the next level, you need to ensure greater control over articles, prepositions inside grammatical patterns, and consistently error-free complex sentences.
