Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing to share my opinion whether the Honda company should spend fund to sponsor children's sports team or two open-air concerts. I read in a newspaper that they are looking for general public's opinion on this notion. I heard the community is building youth team for soccer tournament for the next year. They have all the equipments and supplies to prepare and practice for the game, although they would appreciate it if someone could sponsor their travel and accommodation. This will provide them an opportunity to develop theselves for the future success but also make players' family and the community proud.

On the other side, if open-air concerts are getting sponsored it will create a fun and entertaining social event, where everyone in the area will enjoy. Additionally, It will promote employment opportunities to serve during those days in established food stalls, parking facility and other entertainment zones for kids. Moreover, this event will bring extra revenue to the town.

In my opinion, company should invest in sports field for the social cause. As this small gesture and support will lead those players future to the national level. Furthermore, this investment will be remembered for a long time among the public and it will inspire other industrialists also to involve in such cause.

I hope these suggestions help. let me know how things go.

With regards,

Dp.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The response successfully addresses all parts of the prompt, fulfilling the requirements for general task formatting and content. You clearly describe the benefits of sponsoring the sports team, such as covering travel and accommodation costs for the youth soccer tournament, and you summarise the advantages of the open-air concerts by noting how they create a fun social event and bring extra revenue to the town. Finally, you state a clear preference for the sports sponsorship in your conclusion. However, some ideas are more fully developed than others; for example, the points regarding the concerts are somewhat brief and could be extended further to show the next level of task fulfilment. Overall, your position is maintained clearly throughout, and the main bullet points of the prompt are given adequate attention.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

Your letter demonstrates a clear overall arrangement and logical progression throughout. You make effective use of paragraphing to separate your introduction, the discussion of the sports team, the evaluation of the concerts, your personal recommendation, and the sign-off. Cohesive devices are employed reasonably well to guide the reader through your arguments, such as 'On the other side' and 'Furthermore'. While referencing is mostly clear, a few transitional links feel slightly mechanical rather than entirely natural. Nevertheless, the progression of ideas is easy to follow, meeting the criteria for a well-structured and organized piece of writing.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting some less common phrases such as 'social cause' and 'extra revenue'. However, there are some noticeable inaccuracies in word choice, collocation, and spelling. For instance, writing 'spend fund' instead of 'spend funds' or 'spend money', and 'equipments' which is an uncountable noun. You also write 'develop theselves' (a spelling slip) and use phrases like 'investment will be remembered for a long time' which lack complete naturalness. These lexical errors do not impede communication, but they restrict your score because of the occasional inaccuracies in word choice and form.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

Your writing displays a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating that you can construct multi-clause sentences such as 'I read in a newspaper that they are looking for general public's opinion on this notion.' There are some errors in grammar and punctuation, including missing or incorrect articles (e.g., 'company should invest' instead of 'the company should invest', and 'in sports field' instead of 'in a sports field'). You also have a minor punctuation and register issue at the end with 'let me know how things go.' Despite these errors in grammar, they rarely impede communication, and your control is sufficient for a clear and understandable response.
