Student answer (Band 4.5)

Dear sir,

i am writing about the organisation which assists to sponser local childrens sports by giving few money. The company name is Happy Singh. This company is established before couple of year ago. I favour of this company because it helps to promote sports activities for youth that is more beneficial for their bright future. As they can learn moral skills including team work, communication and problem solving. These sports help children not only stay healthy but also improve the cognitive skills. Moreover, if this company would pay for these activities, it encourage children to win the prizes at international level which would help to make name and fame in front of nations.

This company can arrange sports infrastructure such as net, football, hockey and bat which is more essential to play it. I hope you provide these facilities as soon as so children can take benefits of these amenities.

Yours faithfully,

Gagan Sidhu

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 3.0

The response only partially addresses the task requirements. While the writer attempts to discuss the sponsorship of the sports team, the second option regarding the open-air concerts is completely omitted from the letter. Furthermore, the final recommendation on how the company should spend the money is largely unclear and conflated with details about sports equipment. Ideas are limited and under-developed, with confusion surrounding the company identity and purpose. To improve towards higher bands, the writer must ensure all bullet points from the prompt are fully addressed with extended and relevant details for each option.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.0

There is some organisation evident in the letter, such as the use of standard letter openings and closings, but the response lacks a clear overall progression. Paragraphing is inadequate, as the body of the letter is squashed into a single block that mixes distinct points together without logical separation. Cohesive devices are minimal and sometimes inaccurate, such as the sudden shift in topics using 'Moreover'. Referencing is also occasionally unclear, making it difficult to follow the logical development of ideas. Better paragraph structuring and clearer transitional phrases are needed to guide the reader through the text.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The vocabulary used is limited but minimally adequate to convey basic ideas, with noticeable errors that occasionally cause difficulty for the reader. The writer attempts some less common phrases, such as 'cognitive skills' and 'international level', but these are accompanied by frequent word choice and collocation issues, including 'giving few money', 'make name and fame', and spelling or word-form inaccuracies like 'sponser' and 'encourage' instead of encouraged. To progress, the writer should expand their lexical range and pay closer attention to natural collocations, word forms, and accurate spelling in formal correspondence.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The response displays a limited range of grammatical structures, relying heavily on simple sentences alongside attempts at complex forms that are often faulty. There are frequent errors in grammar, including articles ('the organisation', 'a couple of year ago'), subject-verb agreement ('it encourage'), verb tenses ('is established before couple of year ago'), and prepositions. These errors can cause some difficulty for the reader and obscure the intended meaning. Achieving higher bands will require consistent control over basic grammatical patterns, accurate tense usage, and improved sentence variety.
