Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear Sir or Madam,
I hope you are doing well today.
I am writing to appreciate your decision of investing cdertain amount of money on children's sports team for couple of years or else pay for two open-air concerts.
Firstly, supporting children's sport team would be beneficial for their physical as well as mental well being. This will increase their physical endurance and immunity. As a result, more and more children will be encouraged to take part in sports.
Secondly, paying for open-air concerts will encourage or attract youngsters more than the old aged people. It may also encourage and gather people together to spend some quality time together. That may result in much healthier relations between neighbours or community.
In my opinion, supporting for children's sport tesm for couple of years would extremely beneficial as compared to the open-air concerts. Because sports can help childrens to improve temwork, decision making and communication.
Thank you for your time and consideration. I look forward to hearing from you.
Yours faithfully,
Sam

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
You successfully address all parts of the prompt by describing the benefits of the sports team sponsorship, summarising the advantages of the concerts, and stating your clear preference at the end. Your response shows a clear letter format and purpose. However, some ideas remain slightly under-developed rather than fully extended, which is characteristic of this band level. For instance, while you briefly mention physical and mental well-being for the children, this point could have been expanded with specific examples of how team sports build character or discipline. Similarly, the benefits of the open-air concerts are touched upon regarding community relations, but the connection could be explored further. To reach the next level, ensure every main idea is supported with deeper explanation or illustration.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
Your letter has a coherent overall arrangement with a clear beginning, middle, and end, and you make good use of paragraphing to structure your thoughts logically. You employ standard cohesive devices such as 'Firstly', 'Secondly', and 'In my opinion' to guide the reader through your arguments. While these signposts work well, they are at times a little mechanical or repetitive, which prevents the flow from feeling entirely natural. Furthermore, referencing could be improved slightly to ensure seamless transitions between sentences. To move higher, try to integrate a wider variety of cohesive phrases more subtly and ensure that logical relationships between paragraphs are established with greater sophistication.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully attempting less common items and community-focused terms such as 'endurance', 'community', and 'decision making'. However, there are notable spelling errors and word-choice slips present throughout the letter, such as 'cdertain' instead of 'certain', 'sport tesm', and 'childrens'. Additionally, phrases like 'paying for open-air concerts will encourage or attract youngsters more than the old aged people' show awkward collocation. These minor errors do not impede communication, but they restrict your score. To achieve a higher band, focus on accurate spelling, precise word forms, and natural collocations when attempting more ambitious vocabulary.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
You successfully use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating control over standard structures such as conditional concepts and modal verbs like 'would be beneficial' and 'can help'. There are some grammatical errors present, such as missing articles ('investing cdertain amount of money', 'supporting children's sport team'), incorrect prepositions ('supporting for children's'), and minor subject-verb agreement slips. Nevertheless, these errors rarely impede communication, and the meaning remains clear throughout the response. To progress further, aim for greater accuracy with article usage and prepositions, and incorporate a wider variety of error-free complex sentence structures.
