Student answer (Band 5.5)

Dear Sir,

I am writing this letter to inform you about my perspective that it is a very good development to spend certain amount of money on sponsorship of children's sports team for two years or to pay for two outdoor concerts.

First of all, I want to explain that there are many advantages to sponsor the sports team like, it encourages the competent players to participate and give them chance to show their skills to others, Moreover, it would leads to positive development in our area such as fame.

In addition to this, paying for concert in also beneficial because it is very refreshing outdoor activity and also encourage artistic talent by performing this.

Last but not least, I think that you should spend more money on sports team sponsorship for about three years and spend for only one open-air concert because people in our area are very fond of seeing sports games rather than concerts.

I hope you find my feedback very helpful and I am waiting for your good decision.

Yours sincerely,

Nosheen

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You address all three requested points: you describe benefits of sponsoring the team, mention advantages of concerts, and state a preference for sports sponsorship. The reasons are relevant, particularly giving young players a chance to display their skills and encouraging artistic talent. However, the two options are not developed equally: the concert benefit is only briefly described, and the recommendation to fund the team for three years and hold one concert does not clearly respond to the stated choice between two years of sponsorship or two concerts. Explain more fully who benefits and why, and make your final recommendation fit the options provided. The letter’s purpose is clear, though the opening could state your view more directly.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The letter has a recognisable structure, with separate paragraphs for the sports team, concerts, and your recommendation. Linking phrases such as “First of all,” “In addition to this,” and “Last but not least” help signal the sequence. However, the progression is somewhat mechanical, and some connections are unclear: “In addition to this” does not explain how the concert point relates to the previous paragraph, while the final paragraph introduces a mixed proposal without resolving the original choice. The long opening sentence also makes the purpose less direct. Use clearer topic sentences and connect each benefit to your final recommendation so the letter develops more smoothly.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use relevant vocabulary for the topic, including “sponsorship,” “participate,” “skills,” “artistic talent,” and “open-air concert,” so your meaning is generally understandable. There are also attempts at less common expressions, such as “positive development” and “refreshing outdoor activity.” However, several choices or combinations sound unnatural, including “competent players,” “give them chance,” and “spend for only one open-air concert.” The phrase “fame” is also too vague to explain the benefit to the area. Aim for more precise, natural collocations and vary repeated general words such as “beneficial” and “good.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and more extended sentence forms, and the main ideas can usually be followed. Some grammatical errors remain, particularly with infinitives, agreement, articles, and punctuation. For example, “advantages to sponsor” needs a different verb form, and “it would leads” has incorrect agreement and verb form. In “give them chance,” an article is missing, while the comma splice and capitalisation in “others, Moreover” disrupt the sentence. The opening sentence is also difficult to control because it combines several ideas. Practise accurate patterns such as “advantages of sponsoring” and divide longer sentences into clear clauses; this will improve control without limiting your range.
