IELTS Writing Task 1 question

A large company in your area has decided to spend a certain amount of money, either to sponsor a local children's sports team for two years, or to pay for two open-air concerts. It has asked for feedback from the general public.

Write a letter to the company. In your letter

You do NOT need to write any addresses.

Dear Sir or Madam,

Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am formally writing this letter regarding your article on your choice of sponsorship. It was said that your company is debating whether to sponsor the local children's sports team or pay for two open-air concerts.

While both ideas are valid, I would like to make a suggestion.

Firstly, the local children's sports team has always lacked the financial capacity to purchase modern sport equipments and enhance their performances. With a substantial investment, they would be able to develop their playing styles properly. Furthermore, they may one day represent the country globally.

On the other hand, community concerts can build social cohesion. Due to work life, people rarely associate with one another. For this reason, a concert to bring people together can foster inter-communal relationships.

In addition, this can also be a way for individuals to unwind after work stress and school related activities. The thrills that comes with events can be refreshing to both adults and children alike.

To sum up, my position is that there should be balance between both. Equal funding across both options can be significant. Instead of two concert, the funds for one should be allocated to the sports team. That way, none of the choices would suffer.

I hope you consider my letter.

Yours faithfully,

Odigie Ofure

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

You address all three requested points and maintain a clear recommendation: divide the funding between the team and concerts, with one concert’s funding redirected to the team. The benefits are relevant and supported—for example, sponsorship could improve equipment and performance, while concerts could strengthen community ties and offer relaxation. This meets the descriptor’s expectation that all parts are addressed and ideas are extended. Some support remains general, however: “represent the country globally” is a possible outcome rather than a developed benefit, and the proposed equal funding is not fully reconciled with the suggestion to fund only one concert. Explain more precisely how the company’s money should be divided and why that balance is preferable.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The letter has a clear progression: it introduces the decision, discusses the sports team, considers the concerts, and concludes with a recommendation. Paragraphing is appropriate, and signposts such as “Firstly,” “On the other hand,” and “To sum up” help readers follow the comparison. This is a logical, easy-to-follow structure. Some linking is slightly mechanical, and the conclusion’s reasoning could connect more explicitly to the earlier points: “Equal funding across both options” is followed by a proposal to fund one concert and the team, leaving the precise balance unclear. Use referencing and transitions to show how the final recommendation follows from the benefits discussed, rather than relying mainly on formulaic markers.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.5

You use a useful range of vocabulary for the topic, including “substantial investment,” “social cohesion,” “foster inter-communal relationships,” and “unwind.” These choices show some flexibility and an attempt to use less common expressions. Meaning remains clear, but occasional word-choice and collocation problems limit precision: “sport equipments” is not a natural phrase, “enhance their performances” is less idiomatic in this context, and “the thrills that comes with events” is awkwardly expressed. “Your article” may also be inaccurate if the company has simply requested public feedback. Aim for natural, precise combinations such as “sports equipment,” “improve their performance,” and “the excitement of live events.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including subordinate clauses in “Due to work life, people rarely associate with one another” and “Instead of two concert, the funds for one should be allocated to the sports team.” Most sentences communicate the intended meaning, and the errors do not prevent understanding. Some grammatical inaccuracies remain, including the agreement error in “The thrills that comes,” the plural form in “two concert,” and the article omission in “there should be balance.” The sentence “Equal funding across both options can be significant” is also grammatically possible but unclear in meaning. Review subject–verb agreement, articles, and plural nouns, and check that each sentence expresses the intended relationship clearly.
