IELTS Writing Task 1 question
A large company in your area has decided to spend a certain amount of money, either to sponsor a local children's sports team for two years, or to pay for two open-air concerts. It has asked for feedback from the general public.
Write a letter to the company. In your letter
- describe the benefits of sponsoring the sports team
- summarise the benefits of paying for the concerts
- say how you think the company should spend the money
You do NOT need to write any addresses.
Begin your letter as follows:
Dear Sir or Madam,
Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear Sir or Madam,
I am writing regarding your current publication requesting feedback from the general public. On the one hand, if you spend the money on sponsoring the sports team, it would facilitate children to purchase equipments for the upcoming cricket tournament because not all team members are fortunate enough to cover the expenditure. Thus, your help will be a magic wand for them.
On the other hand, if you spend the money on open-air concerts to be conducted by superstar bands, the money will go to a charity event to treat blind kids. Hence, the local community, being big fans and supporters, would cherish this move.
In my opinion, young talent needs your help considering the upcoming national sports event. If you could help them at this time, and if they make it to the finals, it would make a remarkable move for our local community, and we would appreciate superstar bands forever.
I hope you would consider my suggestions and help the young talent from our community rise high and make a historical move for all of us.
I will eagerly wait for your upcoming announcement as to how you will decide to move forward.
Yours sincerely,
NAV.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
You address all three requested points: you explain that sponsorship could help children afford equipment, describe the concerts’ charitable purpose and community appeal, and clearly recommend supporting the team. The preference is reinforced by the reference to the upcoming national event. However, the benefits of sponsorship are developed more than the benefits of the concerts, which are mainly described as raising money for charity and pleasing local fans. The link between the team’s possible success and the company’s benefit is also not fully explained. To strengthen the response, add a specific advantage of each option and explain why your preferred choice would have the greater lasting impact.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The letter has a clear overall arrangement: an opening, a paragraph for each funding option, a recommendation, and a polite closing. Phrases such as “On the one hand,” “On the other hand,” and “In my opinion” make the main stages easy to follow. However, the contrast markers create a somewhat formulaic progression, and the recommendation paragraph repeats the idea of helping young talent without adding much new support. The final sentence about waiting for an announcement is also slightly detached from the argument. For stronger progression, connect the benefits directly to your recommendation and use referencing that makes the relationship between the team, the event, and the company clearer.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range for a formal letter, including topic-specific terms such as “sponsoring,” “upcoming cricket tournament,” “charity event,” and “local community.” There are also attempts at more expressive language, such as “a magic wand” and “make a historical move.” Some choices are inaccurate or unnatural in context: “purchase equipments” uses an uncountable noun as a plural, while “make a historical move” does not clearly express the intended benefit. “Superstar bands” is also an imprecise description. Aim for more natural collocations and precise wording, especially when explaining the practical benefits of each option; this will make your ideas sound more controlled and convincing.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, and several longer sentences are controlled well, including the explanation beginning “On the one hand” and the conditional sentence about the team reaching the finals. The letter is generally easy to understand, with punctuation and sentence boundaries mostly handled effectively. Some grammatical issues remain: “it would facilitate children to purchase” has an awkward verb pattern, and “if you could help them at this time, and if they make it to the finals, it would make” shifts between conditional forms and leaves the reference of “it” unclear. The sentence beginning “I hope you would consider” also uses an unusual tense combination. Review verb patterns and conditional consistency to make complex sentences more precise.
