Dear Sir or Madam,

Student answer (Band 5.0)

Dear Sir or Madam,

As you know that sport games are widely recognized in many countries and it supports physical health and overall mental well-being of children. It also boosts students confidence and stamina to be competitive. Sport programmes helps children to engage in extra curricular activities which can later encourged them to participate internationally. Therefore, we have decided to develop a local children's sports team for two years and we need sponsorship.

On the other hand, the other option is that we could arrange open-air concerts which is also profoundly popular to gain the general public attention. Moreover, investing in open-air concerts would be equally beneficial for economic development of the country and it can contribute in generating revenues for the company.

Finally, I request for further assistance in choosing the following programmes and need financial support from the company so we can make neccessary arrangements regarding the planning and execution of any one programme.

Your sincerely,

Event manager.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.0

The letter touches on all three requested points, but it responds only minimally to the task. The sports-team section mentions health, confidence and stamina, while the concerts are said to attract public attention and generate revenue. However, these benefits are general and are not explained with specific outcomes for the children, community or company. Most importantly, you do not clearly recommend how the company should spend the money: “I request for further assistance in choosing” leaves the decision open, despite the task asking for your view. The purpose and audience are also unclear because you write as though seeking sponsorship for your own programme. State a definite preference and support it with relevant reasons for each option.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

The response has a basic paragraph structure: it discusses the sports team, then the concerts, and ends with a request. Connectors such as “On the other hand” and “Finally” help signal these stages. However, the overall progression is limited because the final paragraph does not resolve the comparison or give a clear recommendation. The opening, “As you know that…,” also does not establish the purpose of the letter clearly, and the shift to “we have decided” makes the relationship between the writer and the company confusing. Improve the flow by opening with the reason for writing, using one paragraph for each option, and ending with a direct, clearly supported choice.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use some topic-related vocabulary, including “physical health,” “mental well-being,” “stamina,” “open-air concerts” and “economic development.” This gives the letter a suitable general subject range. However, several choices are awkward or imprecise, such as “sport games,” “boosts students confidence,” “gain the general public attention” and “financial support…so we can make necessary arrangements.” Spelling errors such as “encourged” and “neccessary” also reduce accuracy. Aim for natural collocations and precise wording: for example, describe concerts as raising the company’s profile or bringing the community together, rather than making a broad claim about national economic development. Proofread spelling and possessive forms carefully.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The letter includes both simple statements and attempts at longer sentences, for example the sentence beginning “Moreover, investing in open-air concerts…”. Meaning is generally recoverable, but errors in agreement and sentence construction occur. In “sport games are… and it supports,” the pronoun does not agree with the plural subject; “Sport programmes helps” also needs a plural verb form. The opening “As you know that…” is not a well-formed introductory clause, and “I request for further assistance” uses an incorrect grammatical pattern. The closing “Your sincerely” is also inaccurate. Practise subject–verb agreement, clause formation and common verb patterns, then check each sentence for a clear subject and verb.
