Dear Sir or Madam,

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing in response to the survey conducted by your company regarding either sponsoring a junior sports team for next two years, or funding for two open-air concerts.

Sponsoring the sports teams has numerous benefits, including but not limited to encouraging local children to take part in games rather than playing video-games. Moreover, it will foster the feeling of community among the people. Since local news channel will cover the games, it is possible that your company will be praised nation-wide by people and president. Which will be beneficial for company's image and sales.

While, sponsoring a sports team will be beneficial in long-run, funding a local concert will be an opportunity for company to make profits via selling merchandise, arranging food trucks on the event.

Rather than sponsoring sports team for 2-years and arranging 2 concerts, I believe company should arrange 1 concert and sponsor game team for 1-year. As it will be beneficial for both direct and indirect profits.

I hope you will consider my suggestions.

Yours sincerely,

John Conner.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You address all three requested points and maintain a clear recommendation: the company should combine one concert with a year of team sponsorship. The benefits of sponsorship are relevant, including encouraging children to play sport, building community, and improving the company’s public image. You also identify possible concert income from merchandise and food trucks. However, the concert benefits are less fully summarised than the sports-team benefits, and the recommendation to split the funding is not supported with much explanation of why this is preferable to either original option. Develop the comparison by explaining who each choice would benefit and how the proposed compromise would achieve both community and promotional aims.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The letter has a recognisable structure: an opening, separate paragraphs for the two options, a recommendation, and a polite closing. This makes the main message easy to follow. Some connections between ideas are less smooth, however. The sentence beginning “Which will be beneficial” is a fragment separated from the preceding point, and “While, sponsoring a sports team…” uses a contrast marker awkwardly. The final recommendation also introduces a compromise without clearly linking it to the benefits discussed earlier. Use complete sentences and clearer transitions, such as “In contrast” for the concert paragraph and “For these reasons” before the recommendation, while making the progression between points more explicit.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of vocabulary for the topic, including “foster the feeling of community,” “nation-wide,” “merchandise,” and “direct and indirect profits.” These choices help communicate the main ideas, and the meaning is generally clear. Some expressions are imprecise or do not fit naturally, such as “praised nation-wide by people and president” and “sponsor game team.” The phrase “funding for two open-air concerts” is understandable, but the discussion could use more precise language about audience reach, community participation, or publicity. Aim for natural collocations and specific wording so that your ideas sound more fluent and professional in a formal letter.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and more complex sentence forms, including the sentence beginning “Since local news channel will cover the games” and the contrast between the long-term benefits of sponsorship and concert funding. The main meaning remains understandable, but some grammatical errors and punctuation choices reduce accuracy. For example, “for next two years” needs an article, and “Which will be beneficial…” is an incomplete sentence because it is separated from its main clause. “While, sponsoring…” also has incorrect punctuation after the linking word. Review articles and sentence boundaries, and check that dependent clauses are attached to complete main clauses. More consistently accurate complex sentences would make the letter easier to read.
