IELTS Writing Task 1 question
A large company in your area has decided to spend a certain amount of money, either to sponsor a local children's sports team for two years, or to pay for two open-air concerts. It has asked for feedback from the general public.
Write a letter to the company. In your letter
- describe the benefits of sponsoring the sports team
- summarise the benefits of paying for the concerts
- say how you think the company should spend the money
You do NOT need to write any addresses.
Begin your letter as follows:
Dear Sir or Madam,
Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Sir/Madam,
I am writing to give you my feedback regarding whether to sponsor a local children's sports team, or to pay for open-air concerts.
Our community's local cricket team plays very well. It would be very beneficial for them to use this financial aid in their training. Also, they can use the money for travelling other cities to play league cricket. This would improve our local sports.
Conversely, spending this money to arrange two open-air concerts will provide entertainment to our colony's residents. We can pay for a famous singer to participate in the concert. The young people will love this idea.
In my opinion, company should sponsor young player for their sporting evants. This will help to build their future. They can even play for international teams of our country. This is long-term investment and will eventually pay-off in the future rather than spending money on temporary entertainment.
I hope you would consider my suggestion.
Your's faithfully,
John.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
You address all three points and make your recommendation clear: the company should support the children’s team because this could help players develop and create longer-term benefits. You also give relevant reasons, including funding training and travel to league matches, and note that concerts would entertain local residents, particularly young people. This fulfils the task well. To make the ideas more fully extended, explain more specifically how the concerts could benefit the wider community, or how team sponsorship might involve the company and local children. The claim that players could reach international teams is a clear supporting possibility, but it is quite broad; a more realistic explanation of the likely outcomes would make your case more convincing.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The letter has a clear progression: you introduce the purpose, discuss the sports sponsorship, consider the concerts, and then state your preference. Paragraphing supports this structure, and transitions such as “Conversely” and “In my opinion” help signal the shift between options and your conclusion. The ideas are generally easy to follow. To strengthen cohesion further, connect some supporting details more explicitly—for example, explain how travel to other cities would help the team improve. The phrase “This will help to build their future” is also vague in its reference, so specify whether “this” means sponsorship, training, or participation in competitions. These refinements would make the links between points more precise.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
Your vocabulary is adequate for the topic and includes some useful phrases, such as “financial aid,” “league cricket,” “open-air concerts,” and “long-term investment.” These choices communicate the main ideas, though some wording is imprecise or unnatural. For example, “travelling other cities” does not express the intended meaning naturally, and “sponsor young player” is not an accurate phrase for supporting the team. There are also spelling errors in “evants” and “Your’s,” which reduce accuracy. Aim for more precise collocations and check spelling carefully; this would give you greater flexibility and control while keeping your message clear.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple sentences and more developed structures, including “This would improve our local sports” and the contrast in “rather than spending money on temporary entertainment.” Most sentences are understandable, and errors rarely obstruct the message. Some grammatical inaccuracies remain: “company should sponsor” needs an article, while “sponsor young player” also needs a plural or determiner. In “They can use the money for travelling other cities,” the construction after “for” is incomplete; use a form such as “for travelling to other cities.” The final sentence also has a punctuation issue because the comma before “rather than” does not clearly connect the clauses. More consistent control of articles, prepositions, and sentence boundaries would improve accuracy.
