Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing in response to your advertisement regarding the decision to spend money on either to sponser a local children's sports team, or to pay for two open-air concerts. As you have asked about the feedback from public, I would like to suggest some ideas including both events.

On the one hand, sponsoring a team would be beneficial for many local children who are fond of playing sports but have not been given an opportunity yet. They cannot only practice together at one place but can also participate in national games in the future. It would definitely be a great achievement for the company and the area.

On the other hand, paying for concerts can also be a good decision. It would be a great escape for us residents from our hectic routine and work. Moreover, arranging a music festival in our area can lead to increase in the reputation of our society. The area can become popular as well-known artists would come and perform here.

I think your company should invest in sponsoring a team because it would be beneficial in the long run.

I hope my feedback is useful to you. I would apprciate it if you could acknowledge my feedback. I look forward to hearing from you.

Yours faithfully,

Ayesha Waqar

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You address all three points: you explain that sponsorship could give children opportunities to practise and compete, outline the concerts’ appeal as a break for residents and a way to attract artists, and clearly recommend supporting the team. The letter is relevant and its purpose is clear. However, the benefits are not developed equally: the sports-team section gives a future outcome, but does not explain practical benefits such as equipment, coaching, or wider participation; the concert section also makes broad claims about reputation without explaining how the community would benefit. To strengthen the response, add specific supporting detail to each option and give a fuller reason for your final recommendation. The response meets the stated length requirement; eight words copied from the task prompt were not counted.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The letter has a clear overall structure: an opening, separate paragraphs for the two options, a recommendation, and a polite closing. The contrast markers “On the one hand” and “On the other hand” make the comparison easy to follow, and the final recommendation is placed logically after both options. This coherent arrangement is a strength. Some linking is nevertheless mechanical, and the opening sentence is crowded with the alternatives before the purpose is stated clearly. The ideas within each option could also progress more smoothly—for example, connect children’s access to sport with the longer-term community benefit. Use a wider range of natural transitions and clearer links between claims to make the progression more fluent.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use enough vocabulary to communicate the main ideas, including “sponsoring,” “participate,” “hectic routine,” and “reputation.” The wording is generally understandable, but the range and control are uneven, with several noticeable spelling and collocation problems. Examples include “sponser,” “apprciate,” “feedback from public,” and “lead to increase in the reputation.” “A great escape” is understandable but informal for this letter. These choices keep the message clear overall, yet they limit precision and naturalness. Check spelling carefully, learn common word partnerships, and choose a more formal register where appropriate—for instance, describe concerts as providing “a welcome break” and say they could “raise the area’s profile.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt a mix of simple and complex forms, including the contrast between “not only” and “but also,” and the conditional idea “would be beneficial.” Most sentences communicate their meaning, but some grammatical errors remain. In the opening, “either to sponsor … or to pay” is awkwardly constructed after “the decision to spend money”; “feedback from public” is missing a determiner; and “lead to increase” needs a grammatical form such as “lead to an increase.” The sentence “They cannot only practice” also misplaces the paired construction: use “They can not only practise … but also participate …”. Review articles, verb patterns, and parallel structures, while continuing to use complex sentences with careful checking.
