Dear Sir or Madam,

Student answer (Band 6.5)

DEAR MADAM,

I AM WRITING THIS EMAIL TO SHARE MY OPINION ABOUT HOW YOUR COMPANY SHOULD SPEND MONEY WISELY TO SUPPORT THE LOCAL COMMUNITY. ACCORDING TO MY PREFERENCE, I THINK SPONSORING A LOCAL CHILDREN'S SPORTS TEAM FOR TWO YEARS WOULD BE BETTER RATHER THAN PAYING FOR TWO OPEN-AIR CONCERTS.

SPONSORING A LOCAL TEAM HAS MORE BENEFITS. FIRSTLY, IT ENCOURAGES CHILDREN TO TAKE PART IN PHYSICAL ACTIVITIES AND DEVELOP A HEALTHY LIFESTYLE.SECONDLY, CHILDREN CAN LEARN IMPORTANT SKILLS SUCH AS TEAMWORK, DISCIPLINE AND LEADERSHIP. MOREOVER, FINANCIAL SUPPORT FROM YOUR COMPANY HELPS THE LOCAL COMMUNITY TO GET SOME SPORTS EQUIPMENT, UNIFORMS AND PAY FOR THE TRAINING FACILITIES. THIS WOULD GIVE CHILDREN FROM LOW-INCOME FAMILIES AN OPPORTUNITY TO PARTICIPATE IN SPORTS.

ON THE OTHER HAND, PAYING FOR OPEN-AIR CONCERTS IS ALSO BENEFICIAL BECAUSE IT WOULD PROVIDE ENTERTAINMENT FOR PEOPLE OF ALL AGES AND BRING THE COMMUNITY TOGETHER. THEY WOULD HAVE A CHANCE TO ENJOY MUSIC AND SPEND TIME WITH FAMILIES AND FRIENDS.

THANK YOU FOR CONSIDERING MY OPINION. I HOPE YOU MAKE A DECISION THAT WOULD BENEFIT THE LOCAL COMMUNITY.

YOUR REGARDS,

RAVNEET KAUR

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You address all three requested points and make your preference clear: you recommend sponsoring the children’s team. The benefits are relevant and include physical activity, life skills, equipment, and access for children from low-income families. You also summarise the concerts’ value as entertainment and a way to bring people together. However, the concert benefits are less developed than the sports-team benefits, and the letter could explain more specifically why the two-year sponsorship would have a lasting impact or how it would benefit the company and community. The response is appropriately focused on the task; developing the comparison more evenly would make the case more complete.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The letter has a clear progression: you state your purpose and preference, explain the sports sponsorship, contrast it with concerts, and close politely. Paragraphing helps distinguish the two options, while signposts such as “Firstly,” “Secondly,” “Moreover,” and “On the other hand” make the sequence easy to follow. This is a coherent and well-organised response. Some linking is a little formulaic, however, and the final paragraph moves quickly from the concerts’ benefits to the closing without explicitly comparing them with the longer-term value of sponsorship. More varied transitions and a concluding sentence that draws the comparison together would make cohesion more flexible.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.5

You use an adequate range of relevant vocabulary, including “physical activities,” “healthy lifestyle,” “teamwork,” “discipline,” “leadership,” and “low-income families.” These choices communicate the main ideas clearly, and the tone is generally suitable for a formal letter. Some phrasing is less natural or precise, such as “spend money wisely to support” and “get some sports equipment,” while “beneficial” and “benefits” are repeated. The all-capital presentation also makes the letter less polished, although it does not obscure meaning. To strengthen your vocabulary, use more precise collocations and vary repeated terms—for example, describe the sponsorship as providing resources or widening access to sport.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and more developed sentence forms, and most ideas remain clear. For example, “This would give children from low-income families an opportunity to participate in sports” is a well-formed sentence, and the opening uses a subordinate clause to express your preference. Some grammatical and punctuation slips remain: there is no space after the full stop in “lifestyle.Secondly,” and “helps the local community to get some sports equipment, uniforms and pay for the training facilities” has an awkward parallel structure because “helps” does not connect smoothly to all three actions. The closing “I hope you make a decision that would benefit” also shifts between present and conditional forms. Check spacing and keep verb patterns parallel.
