Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing a feedback for ABC company who is going to spend a certain amount of money. You have two options, either to sponsor a local children's sports team for two years, or to pay for two open-air concerts.

Local children's sports team has been under funded for four years. It would benefit a lot from the sponsorship. Team would be able to hire a full time coach, children would be able to make trips for matches and we could buy new balls for the team. Which will give team an opportunity to play better and win matches which in turn will give a moral boost to the team.

Two open-air concerts will be new concept in our neighborhood. The city is very excited. The whole city will come together, it will also bring money to the city. It will be fun time and money will be well spent. Above all concert will cater to all the ages.

In my opinion, the company should spend money for local children's sports team as they are the future of the city. Sports help in overall development of children, they get funded and they go to good college. The sports team has been lagging funding for a long time. Even though concert has it's benefit too, but sports team improvement would not have lasting impact as local children's asports team.

We would be greatful for your support of our children. I really appreciate it.

I am looking forward to hearing from you.

Yours faithfully,

Swetta

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You address all three points and make your recommendation clear: you favour supporting the children’s team because it has lacked funding and sport can aid children’s development. The team’s needs are supported with specific examples, including hiring a coach, travelling to matches and buying balls. You also identify the concerts’ appeal to the whole city, their potential economic benefit and their suitability for different ages. This meets the task well, with some elements more fully developed than others. To show more of the next level, explain more precisely how the concerts would benefit the community or company, and clarify the final comparison: “would not have lasting impact” appears to contradict your argument for the team.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The letter has a clear overall arrangement: an opening, separate paragraphs for the two options, a recommendation and a polite closing. This makes the main ideas easy to locate. However, some links between ideas are mechanical or unclear. For example, “Which will give team an opportunity” is a fragment, and “Above all concert” does not clearly connect to the preceding points. The final sentence about lasting impact is also difficult to follow and weakens the progression of your recommendation. Use complete sentences and clearer references, and make the relationship between each benefit and your conclusion explicit. This would make the organisation more consistently smooth.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use relevant vocabulary for the topic, including “sponsorship,” “full time coach,” “moral boost,” “overall development” and “lasting impact.” These choices help communicate the main points, and the reader can generally understand your meaning. However, some word choices and collocations are inaccurate or awkward, such as “writing a feedback,” “under funded,” “a fun time,” and “lagging funding.” There are also spelling errors in “greatful” and “asports,” while “it’s benefit” uses the wrong form. Aim for more natural phrases and check spelling and word forms carefully. Greater precision would help you express the benefits and your recommendation more convincingly.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and more complex sentence forms, including the contrast beginning “Even though concert has it’s benefit too” and the explanation of how sponsorship could help the team. Meaning is usually recoverable, but some grammatical errors remain. Examples include missing articles in “Local children’s sports team” and “Team would be able,” the fragment “Which will give team an opportunity,” and the unclear construction “would not have lasting impact as local children’s asports team.” The sentence listing what the team could do also needs clearer punctuation to separate its clauses. Practise article use, complete sentence construction and punctuation in longer sentences; these changes would improve accuracy while preserving your range.
